Problem displaying image on both LCD and Projection screen

I have a Dell Latitude D600, which as of today has quit allowing me to display the image on the laptop screen as well as on a projection screen (either rgb1 or rgb2). The toggle function keys (Fn+F8) will allow me to toggle between projection screen only, and LCD only, but not both projection screen and LCD. As I mentioned, this only started happening today. Prior to that there was no problem. The question is, can there be a problem with the Fn+F8 key? I have an identical laptop which toggles through all three options using the Fn+F8 keys. I have compared all of the display settings between the two computers in control panel and they are identical. Any ideas? Thanks.

Jubert, no new software or hardware was installed. Prior to this happening the machine had been used a couple of days before using the projector with no problem. Thanks.

I see. Try to restore your system to a day the last time your toggle is working. If that did not work try to reinstall your drivers. specifically for your video card and the utility for your keyboard shortcuts.

The backlight won't turn on but occasionally will flicker.

Suggest you replace the Inverter. A Backlight goes out all at once.
90% of the time the Inverter is the hardware part at fault.

[ An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself.
A Backlight is used to supply the needed extra lighting.
A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a much smaller scale

An Inverter is used to required power for the LCD screen, and the Backlight.
Boosts power up for the LCD screen, brings it down for the Backlight.

Replacing an Inverter is a simple job. Replacing a Backlight is not.
The Backlight is located within the LCD screen assembly.

The metal frame of the LCD screen assembly is removed along the edge where the Backlight is located, to access replacing the Backlight.

In the above list for Service Manual, click on > Display Assembly and Display Latch.

This information shows you where the Inverter is located on a Dell Latitude D620 Notebook PC.
The Latitude D620 is part of the Latitude D600 series of Notebook PC's.

Just one place from a quick search, that sells Inverters for a Latitude D600 series Notebook PC,

http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=2895

MATCH the part number listed that they have, to the part number on your Inverter.
You have to have THE correct Inverter.

Dell latitude D600 display blacks out, showing just a ghost image

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is the backlight.

If you see a very dim image or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
