Microwave Turning On By Itself

Hi, I have the Sharp R1610 that will turn on by itself, won't shut off if you hit the stop/cancel, and turns on then right back off if you use the minute button.

SOURCE: Microwave does not turn off

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

SOURCE: Our microwave/convecton turns itself off after about a minute

This is a problem in one of the damper-related components, most likely the switch, but it may also be the motor or the damper door.

The damper is a door inside that opens or closes depending on cooking mode. If the controller senses that the door is not in the right position, it will shut down the cook cycle.

Sharp models stop after 59 seconds.

See the attached sample photo for a typical damper assembly.

We have the applicable service manuals for these models and have uploaded it to our site here and here to help you. You will need the free Adobe Reader to view or print it.

If a switch is all you need, we offer a universal type for only $5 postpaid which you can order here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: Sharp Microwave Oven over stove fan goes on by itself

Please note that FixYa is not currently notifying us Experts when Clarification Requests are answered.

So please post a
NEW question, and please include your brand name and the full model number from the tag in or on the unit, as well as the answers to these questions:

Which fan is it?

The
internal cooling fan, which comes on automatically whenever the unit is microwaving?

Or the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually?

Or the convection fan, if it is a convection model?

When is it coming on?

Is it coming on whenever you cook on the stove top?

Thanks!

Kenmore microwave model 721.85033010 works fine except the exhaust fan comes on just out the blue for no reason and wont shut off without unplugging.

It turns itself on
  1. Interlock switch If your microwave is turning itself on, the first thing to check is the interlock switch. This is usually the first thing to malfunction that could cause this issue. If the interlock switch is bad then it will need to be replaced.
  2. Main control board If your microwave is turning itself on and the interlock switch is still working, the probable cause is the main control board. If the control board is defective it will need to be replaced.
But before throwing parts at it give these folks a call...

My sharp R409Y*A microwave overheats after 4 min every time and shuts itself off for a few min. It will turn itself back on, but if I use it right away, it will shut itself off again quicker.

I would say your cooling ran is not running, or your vent holes are blocked, or (if equipped) a filter is blocked.

Without the cooling fan, the magnetron overheats and its TCO (thermostat) shuts down all power to the oven until it cools back down to a safe temperature, then power is restored.

Whirlpool microwave turns on and have to open door to stop it

Has it got wet inside at all? If so it could sort itself out after drying out.
But I would keep leaving the door open as you do, or replace it. Because it is a safety risk, if it came on while empty, after a while it could set fire to itself.

Turntable wont stop turning, even when not in use

The turntable is a seperate intenty from the microwave itself, I would presume that the switch that turns off the turntable when the door is opened needs replacement.

1990 Sharp Carousel II over microwave / vent hood

Sharp calls that the turntable coupler when it's a separate part.

If it's part of the the part with three legs, that is called the turntable support.

You can order Sharp parts from Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com

If yours is model R1610, we actually have that full service manual on our site at http://www.microwavedisplay.com/r1610_sm.pdf

Sharp r-1610 microwave

It could be the turntable motor, the turntable support (with built-in coupler) or a problem on the control board. I would first look at the 3-legged turntable support with built-in coupler to see if it got hot and warped. It should be flat across the top from the center to the end of the legs. If the support's legs are pointing a bit downward, it will prevent the coupler from making contact with the motor shaft. I've held bent ones a few inches over a gas burner to heat them up where the legs meet the center hub, then set something a bit heavy on it to hold it in place while it cools. If it needs a new one, it is part # FROLPB025MRK0 and it runs $19.50 retail at Tritronics. A quick (but not necessarily definitive) test of the motor is to grab the shaft gently with pliers and gently try to turn it. If it moves slowly and makes a high-pitched whining noise, it's likely okay. If it won't turn or grinds, it is bad. The number for the new turntable motor is RMOTDA264WRZZ and it retails for $8.87. Please note that you may need to look under model R1600, R1600, R1601, R1601, R1610, or R1612. They are all mostly the same. Tritronics is at http://www.wehaveparts.com The service manual for the R1610, R1611, R1612 can be downloaded at: http://www.microwavedisplay.com/R1610.pdf There may be a grommet bewteen the mtoro and turntable support. Don't lose that! Be safe!
