There are several different possible causes so if you have your manual it will tell you how to go through some of the resets. From what your describing it sounds as if the graphics chip is one of those possibilities. Nvidia had some questionable chips used in some of the 2007 model MBP's so if your MBP falls in this category you need to call Apple as they extended the warranty for these models to 3 years. There are some home remedies for this issue but I would definitely go through Apple as the graphics chip is part of the logic board as a lot can go wrong and there is no graphics card to just change out. If this doesn't apply to you then your back to the resets which you can get a list for all of these on the Apple website.

Is this a trick question? There is no "DOS mode" on a MacBook Pro.
Do you have WIndows installed as part of Boot Camp, and your machine is booting into Windows? To boot back into the Mac, either use the Boot Camp control panel in Windows, or hold down the Option key after you hear the startup chime and select the OS X partition to boot from.
