I have tried replacing batteries and using a power supply with the same issue. It will also give a static sound as well about 50% of the time. Unable to hold a setting especially when using the elliptical

From what I am reading the console also goes blank. If this is correct it very well might be a loose connection especially with it being incosistant with the duration of time between shut downs. The lubrication could be the issue but normally it will not cause the console to shut off also. It will normally only cause the thermal switch in the drive motor to shut down until it cools down to approx. 115 f then it will start back up. But with the time frame being so short if the user is around 275 to 300 pounds this could be a cause where the lubrication would be a greater issue.
Good luck.

Ok, your controller is faulty. Double check that your reed switch is connected and adjusted. It is located at the pully on the front roller. It is just outboard of the pully. It points at a magnet that is glued into the plastic pully. It should be about 1/8" away from the pully. If that is ok follow the wire back to the controller, it only has two small black wires, It has a red two place connector that pushes on the controller board. These are rarely the problem. If you are under warranty, get both the controller and the reed switch. If I would guess, It is the controller that is your problem.

Testimonial: "Matt, Thank you for the quick response and trouble shooting solution. I checked the reed switch and it appears to have the proper spacing. I will replace the controller. Thanks again. Telcomac"

1) replace new batteries with the same type, and o.k polarity.
2) clean the contacts batteries with c.cleaner and retight the spring with plier for a GOOD contact.
3) adjust the REED swtich, test it , clean it and tight the plugs
4) tight the ribbon cable inside for a good contacts keypads.

The way to tell if your NordicTrack digital console is bad is to troubleshoot it first. If nothing works, you've got a bad console. The digital console is an important part of exercising. A manual machine will still work even if the console doesn't, but an automated machine needs the console to work so you can adjust things like speed, resistance and incline. You also can't use programs or see your time, distance or estimated calories burned without a working console. The two most common reasons that a console will be dim, display bad results, or won't turn on are bad batteries and a problem with the reed switch.
