Backhoe 580E was running scooping up dirt and right in the middle of that it stopped. It didn't sputter or anything. I thought I heard a little pop, but no one else did. Now it won't stay running. The battery, starter, etc. work fine, but it doesn' seem to be getting fuel. We changed the filters . We used starter fluid and it started, but as soon as the starter fluid was gone it died.

Could you be more specific in the syndrome?

Try disconnecting the power cord. This should allow the machine to "reboot"

check for fuse in the stop solenoid circuit
assuming it is a diesel engine that would be one thing to cause a sudden stop next would be a fuel air leak
if is a disaster to use easy start in a diesel as they have been known on many occasions to blow the piston through the sump, break cranks or blow the heads off
The reason is simple
diesels compress the air to white heat and then inject fuel at around 15 degrees btdc
by spraying in easy start which is highly volatile , it will self ignite around 95 degrees BTDC as it makes the compressing air highly explosive

i would suggest checking fuel pressure and fuel filter could have little dirt or something clogging fuel and engine light will stay on due to too rich or too lean of fuel/air mixture

How many miles? Because if you haven't, consider having your fuel system inspected. It may be time for a fuel filter replacement.

Possibly a dirty fuel filter or faulty pump,just a guess though.

Maybe being that he was a "Stortster rider" that's why he used it? I wouldn't put anything like that in the tank. No telling what results you may get when it contacts the parts in the system. Possible he was pulling your leg?
