Problem charging Hi I live in the UK and I have just purchased 2 new batteries for my motorola radius p110 2 channel walkie talkies. They are proberbly 15 years old and when I tried to charge the new batteries I keep getting a flashing yellow light which is the "out of range" signal. The old batteries charge OK in the charger so I think the charger is fine. Can anyone HELP?

Thank you for being so prompt. The light is the one on the charger (Model ETN4611A) and the batteries are correct as well, Ni-Cd 7.5v (HNN8148A ) The charger has flashing red light (unchargable) flashing yellow (out of range<0c) steady red (rapid charge) flashing green (90% charged) steady green (100% charged) The only difference is on the labels they both state HNN8148A the old ones have got 640 IK the new ones have 520 AKA on them

If you are referring to a flashing yellow light on the charging base, this is an error code. Either the 1) battery is bad, 2) not making good contact in the charger, or 3) very very low on charge. The solution for this set of problems is as follows: 1) have the company you purchased them from replace them, 2) clean your contacts with a pencil eraser, 3) leave the battery on the charger with the yellow light flashing for an hour or two. If the battery is just very low on a charge, it will come back to life and the light will change to be constant. If the battery is bad or shorted out, the light will continue to flash and you will need to get with the vendor you purchased the batteries from.

Other things which come to mind are compatibility issues such as you are using a different battery chemistry than you had before. NiCd batteries can charge on either of the two chargers available for the P110 (slow rate or fast rate). However, NiMH and Li-Ion batteries require a fast rate charger.

If you are referring to a yellow blinking light on the radio while it is in the charger. You need to shut your radio off. Radios should always be turned off when charging. If the radio is left on you will never have a full charge. Also, if you inadvertently press the PTT while the radio is turned on, while on a charger, you can cause damage to the radio.

FYI: There is no light to show "out of range" on the radio, unless you are possibly using a trunking or repeater system. A blinking light on your radio indicates the radio is turned on and/or there is traffic on your frequency. Your charger base light can be red, yellow or green. This indicates the charge cycle status. Flashing most always means some type of error.

Best regards

I see the potential problem, your date codes you provided indicate the "new" batteries are not new date codes. Your 640 reads 2006 the 40th week. These are nearly 3 years old. While they may never have been used, and shelf life is thought to be indefinite, the batteries probably have dropped to being too low of an initial factory charge to charge correctly. Your "out of range" means the batteries' charge is out of the range of the charger (too low). Try leaving the batteries on the charger for an extended period of time. If this does not jump start them, then you should get in touch with the vendor who sold you the "old" new batteries.

I have k7gfv700 Motorola walkie talkies w/ charger. The charge seems to work, but the lighs one the charge are red and the talkie do not charge. Do I need new batteries and where can I purchase the

You might try http://wirelesspro.com, we have found them to carry most TalkAbout accessories and batteries. Before ordering battery packs, you might try switching your existing good battery to the other radio and see if it solves the problem. This would assure you that it is indeed a battery problem.

I bought new batteries for a Motorola Radius SP21 walkie talkie but it still does work.

Here are a handful of things which could be the problem:
1. Check to be certain you have the battery installed the correct direction. With this radio, it is a common mistake to put the battery in backwards. The Motorola logo w/name should be facing forward, and with the radio in an upright position, you should be able to read the words on the battery.
2. Check your charger. The red light should come on and stay on during charging.
3. Clean all battery contacts gently with a pencil eraser to remove dirt/dust/hand oils, then try charging again. If you are using a wall plug charger only (not a drop-in) you may have a problem with the jack on the radio.
4. Check your radio to be certain it is set to the correct frequency and PL code. It must be set identical to your other radios in order for them to communicate with one another. If you need help with this you can give us a call at 800-872-2627, and we'd be happy to walk you through SP21 programming over the phone.

Uniden walkie talkie

What is the condition of the batteries? Try it with new ones and if you still have this issue, you need special equipment to test the output and sensitivity of the transcievers.

Two sets of Motorola Walki Talki radios will not communicate.

In addition to the channel and privacy codes, some Motorola two-way radios have a feature called Eavesdrop Reducer where you have 3 scramble settings available; perhaps you have this set on one of sets of radios but not the other. It should be something like that because otherwise there is no reason that by setting the radios to the same channel and privacy code they wouldn't be able to send/receive to each other.

I bought walkie talkies with 56 km radius and yet we are lucky to reach each other after approx. 1 mile, any idea why we don't get the range

You do not mention the particular model of Motorola, so this answer will be generic in nature. Some Motorola TalkAbout radios have been factory programmed with a few GMRS repeater frequencies. These channels require the use of a repeater tower, which will 'repeat' what you say over a greater distance. It is possible you have this type of radio. Check your user guide, and then set your radio to the appropriate channel for the repeater in your area.

Radio-to-radio without the use of a repeater you can expect up to 2 miles line-of-sight out of most handheld radios. This distance is reduced by obstacles such as buildings, trees, etc. inbetween the radios. It can also be reduced if you do not hold the antenna of the radio perpendicular to the ground.

Newbie here..Can anyone enlight me on a set of Motorola Radius P110 2-Way UHF Radios with Batteries and Holding Case. Is there any Value in them or should o=i Junk em? As I said I'm new to 2 way radio and...

The P110 is a construction grade 2-way radio. It was considered one of the best on the market during the 1990s. It came in several versions, including (but not limited to) VHF & UHF; 2 to 8 channels, 2 watt or 4/5 watt models. If your radios are in good working condition, they would be worth keeping. The only consumable would be the battery pack which needs replaced every 2-3 years. (Sidenote: You can check the battery age by looking for a 3 digit number on the battery. The first number is the year and the next two digits are the week of the year the battery was produced. ie. 945 would be either 2009 or 1999 the 45th week.)

Here is a link to the operator's guide for the P110: http://www.qsl.net/bg4aaf/user/motorola/p110S.pdf

How to program frequences in a radius p110 radio

The P110 radio is computer programmable. The software is Motorola proprietary, so it is only available to Motorola dealers and a few select types of end-users. The best option is to have it programmed by a dealer. (Just for a cost example: Our dealership does them for $15 plus shipping.)
