I installed ACDC for Pentax to my wife's PC; when I turn on the camera, I don't get the dialog box with "copy images to hard drive & launch ACDC" message.

Okay, in my comment I reported that I had this problem. Now I have discovered a solution. A little deception is in order!
The way to get this piece of legacy hardware working on modern PC's is to convince the PC that your camera is something with which it can communicate. After plugging in your Pentax 230, open your Control Panel and type "Device Manager" into the search box. (There are other ways to access the Device Manager, but this seems to be the easiest to describe here.) With the search complete, click "Device manager" (You'll probably see a few instances of Device Manager, any of them will work.)
In the device tree, the Pentax should stick out like a sore thumb with a little yellow exclamation point tag thingy on it. Double click the Pentax in the list and you should see a dialog box that says something to the effect of, "The drivers for this device are not installed." Click the button "Update Driver."
In the wizard that pops up click: Browse my computer... -> Let me pick from a list... -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers (in the list) -> Next (button) -> Manufacturer: SanDisk Corporation -> Model: SanDisk USB ImageMate Multimedia Card Reader -> Next (button).
The computer's nit-nanny utility will pop up to warn you that this can do bad things, and it may be right, but I experienced no problems when I tried this on two computers (Side note: DO NOT tell the computer this is a disk drive, bad things do happen then!). Click "Yes" that you do want to continue installing this driver.
The computer will begin to churn and will install the driver for the SanDisk Multimedia Card Reader, and your camera should appear as a removable storage device in the "Computer" window.

Your problem is part of the dreaded A90 error code these cameras get. My camera had this last year and updated firmware cured it till this month when my wife let the battery go dead and the problem returned, but firmware update won't fix it this time around.Go to Pentax site and download new firmware for camera. Follow instructions that come from Pentax on the download to install software. Its pretty easy. These are cheap cameras as far as Pentax is concerned. They only work for about 2 years, based on other users and my experience. Good luck

- You have turned off any virus-checking software that may be running.
- You have exited all other applications.
