This is a defective CCD problem and will be repaired free of charge by Nikon even if the camera is out of it's original warranty. Check the link at this site: http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html

Nikon has posted a Service Advisory for this problem and will fix CCD-only related problems by replacing the CCD, free of charge. It applies to the 5700 and a few other models only. I'm not sure if this applies outside of the US. Link below. http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/coolpix.html

Your LCD screen has been cracked, it will have to be replaced. The screen is actually made of thin glass, so what you are seeing is actually just like a cracked or broken mirror or window. This kind of damage is not covered by manufacturers warranty so I would suggest finding a repair facility online to service your camera if you wish to get it replaced. The replacement LCD should be somewhere from $60 to $80 and somewhere around $50 in labor. The problem with communicating with your computer is unrelated to the screen issue. Try again, and make sure everything is set up right. It is likely that function still works fine. :) David Millier Advance Camera Repair
