I cannot figure out how to setup the fax that came with printer

Hi Vallarie

Verify that the phone connector on the wall can carry a phone call!
Connect a phone & prove that you can dial out.
Remove phone.
Use a short phone cable to plug in to the Printer then into the phone connector on the wall.
Put the printer in fax mode, then use the printer keyboard to dial a phone number. If that works, your almost there.
Scan a document & send to the phone number.
If that dials out... OK. Then try sending to a phone number with a known Fax machine at the other end. When the two fax machines start communicating through "tones" then the document will be sent as a Fax.

Cheers

Hello, We can receive faxes but can no longer send faxes from our HP laserjet 3390. The display window shows a 9 infront of the number we are trying to fax, dials that number and then does not complete...

You have to go into the settings on the fax machine. There will be an option for a prefix number. Someone put a 9 in there. Having the 9 in there will make it dial a 9 then the number you are trying to faxt too. Remove the 9.

Cannot send faxes on my all in one hp office jet 5610

If the recipient side is ringing, then the problem is on their end. It sounds like the receiving fax is not set for auto-answering a fax call. A receiving fax machine should pick up and start to attempt the reception even if the fax number is dialed from a normal voice-only telephone; the receiving machine has no idea if the caller is a fax or a regular phone. It should pick up regardless and start to negiotiate the fax (that's the high-pitched whistling sound at the beginning of the call).

Cannot send or receive faxes

How to dial *xx codes when faxing When sending a fax, it may be necessary to enter in a *xx code as the first part of the number. Follow the steps below to dial *99 when using a VoIP service. NOTE: Since the *xx code is an instruction to the phone system, this must be dialed live.
  1. To pick up the line on the HP All-in-One, press Start Black Fax or Start Color Fax without entering a phone number first.
  2. When you hear the dial tone, enter in the *99 code.
  3. Wait a few seconds and then enter in the rest of the number.
  4. The HP All-in-One will complete the fax as normal.
What can be done to help the fax transmission? The communication speed is a major factor in fax transmission over VoIP. Currently there are three speed standards.
  • Fast - v.34 which communicates at 33.6 Kbps.
  • Medium - v.17 which communicates at 14.4 Kbps
  • Slow - v.29 which communicates at 9.6 Kbps
Changing the Fax Speed Adjustment setting to Medium may improve your ability to send a fax over a VoIP network. On most HP fax products the connection speed can be set to a lower speed. Those that do not have a Fax Speed setting generally communicate at medium speed or lower as this was the past standard. Consult your user's manual for information specific to your model. Changing the Fax Speed Adjustment to a lower speed Follow the steps below.
  1. Press Setup .
  2. Select Advanced Fax Setup .
  3. Press OK .
  4. Select Fax Speed .
  5. Press OK .
  6. Select Medium .
  7. Press OK .
  8. Try the fax again. If you continue to have problems faxing, contact your VoIP provider as they may have options to improve the ability to send and receive faxes over VoIP telephone service.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Cannot receive faxes

Step one: Check the fax number
Make sure the fax number is correct; include any numbers that you have to dial to use the telephone, such as an area code, access codes for outside lines or long-distance services, and so on. If you have to dial a particular sequence of numbers to make a telephone call from that telephone line, you also have to dial that sequence of numbers to send a fax.
If the issue is resolved, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the number is correct, continue to the next step.
Step two: Dial the number manually
Instead of using a speed dial setting or sending the fax from the computer, dial the number manually from the product control panel.
If the fax sends when you dial the number from the control panel, follow these steps to recreate the speed dial setting and insert pauses in the number.
On the product control panel, press the Setup button.
Press the Left Arrow button ( ) or Right Arrow button ( ) until Speed Dial Setup appears on the control panel display, and then press the OK button.
Press the Left Arrow button ( ) or Right Arrow button ( ) until Individual Speed Dial appears on the control panel display, and then press the OK button.
Press the Left Arrow button ( ) or Right Arrow button ( ) to select an unassigned speed dial entry, and then press the OK button.
Use the product keypad to enter any numbers that must be inserted before the fax number, such as an area code or access codes for outside lines or long-distance services, and then press the Redial/Pause button to insert a pause.
Enter the rest of the fax number, using the Redial/Pause button to insert pauses between the numbers, and then press the OK button.
Enter the name of the speed dial setting, and then press the OK button to save the speed dial setting.
Try to send the fax again.
If the issue is resolved , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue is not resolved , continue to the next step.
Step three: Run a fax diagnostic test
Press the On button ( ) to turn on the product, and then make sure the product is correctly connected to the telephone jack.
Make sure that there is plain white paper in the input tray.
On the product control panel, press 6 , and then press 6 again.
This selects the Tools menu and then selects Run Fax Test .
The fax diagnostic test page prints.
Review the results of the test.
If the result of the fax diagnostic test is All Pass , skip to Step four: Reinitialize the fax.
If the result of the fax diagnostic test is a failure, a page prints that describes the issue and offers possible solutions. Follow the solutions on the printout.
If the solutions on the printout resolve the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the solutions on the printout do not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step four: Reinitialize the fax
While the product is on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the product and from the electrical outlet.
Make sure that the telephone cord is fully inserted into the port labeled 1-Line on the back of the product.
Connect the power cord to the back of the product, and then connect the power cord to the electrical outlet.
When the product is in the ready state, try to send and receive a fax again.
If the issue is resolved , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue is not resolved , continue to the next step.
Step five: Test the send/receive functions
Use the product keypad to send a fax. Watch the product control panel display and listen to the sounds the product makes.
If the product is working correctly, the following events occur.
When the product begins to dial, a dial tone is audible, followed by the sound of the product dialing. A Dialing message appears on the control panel display.
When the receiving fax answers the call, the product and the fax exchange tones. A Connecting message appears on the control panel display. During this phase, the product and the fax compare capabilities, exchange information about how to send the fax, and try to establish a reliable transmission speed.
After the connection is established, the product sends the pages of the document. Messages appear on the control panel display that indicate the status, such as Sending page 1 .
Review the results of the fax.
If the fax is transmitted successfully, continue to the next step.
If there is no audible dial tone or the receiving fax does not answer the call, try sending the fax to a different destination. If this second attempt also fails, continue to the next step.
If the receiving fax answers the call and begins beeping, but the Connecting message does not appear on the product control panel display, the product is not detecting the tones from the receiving fax. Continue to the next step.
Step six: Use an analog telephone service
HP Fax and All-in-One products are designed to work with analog telephone services and might experience some difficulties when they are connected to phone lines with digital services. Make sure the product is connected to an analog telephone service.
To obtain digital services information or support, contact the telephone service provider or system administrator.
Step seven: Check the phone cord and fax connections
Disconnect the telephone cord, and then examine the connector on the end of the cord. Make sure the cord only has two wires.
Figure 1: Telephone cord with two wires
Figure 2: Telephone cord with four wires
If the cord has four wires, replace it with a two-wire telephone cord.
If you must use a cord with four wires, use the converter that shipped with product. The converter allows a cord with four wires to work with a device that requires a cord with two wires.
Make sure the fax is connected directly to the telephone jack by a telephone cord. Connect the cord to the 1-Line port on the back of the product.
Figure 3: Fax only
1 - Telephone jack
2 - Telephone line
3 - 1-Line
4 - 2-Ext
If other devices need to use the same telephone jack, make sure they are connected to the 2-Ext port on the back of the product.
Connect a single-line telephone to 2-Ext , and then pick up the receiver and listen for a dial tone. Make sure you are able to dial out using the telephone keypad. If you hear a dial tone and are able to dial out using the phone, the product is properly connected to a working telephone cord and telephone jack.
Figure 4: Fax and telephone

2 - Telephone line
3 - 1-Line
4 - 2-Ext
5 - Telephone
Figure 5: Fax and PC or modem
1 - Telephone jack
2 - Telephone line
3 - 1-Line
4 - 2-Ext
5 - PC or modem
If you change any cable connections, try sending and receiving a fax again to make sure that the issue is resolved.
If the issue is resolved , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue is not resolved , continue to the next step.
Step eight: Remove any other devices from the telephone line
If any other devices, such as a telephone, an answering machine, or a modem, are connected to the telephone line, remove each device.
NOTE: Remove each device even if it is in another room, connected to another telephone jack, or connected using a line splitter.
Connect the product to an analog telephone line by connecting one end of the two-wire telephone cord directly to the telephone jack and then connecting the other end of the telephone cable directly to the 1-Line port on the back of the product.
Try to send a fax again.
If the issue is resolved , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue is not resolved , continue to the next step.
Step nine: Perform a partial reset of the product
A partial reset of the product returns all fax settings to the default values. It might be necessary to reset the language and country/region settings after the partial reset is complete.
Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
Wait 20 seconds, and then press and hold # and 3 on the product control panel.
Connect the power cord to the back of the product, and then release the buttons when the product turns on.
The product is reset to factory defaults.
Try to send and receive faxes again. If the problem still exists, continue to the next step.
Step ten: Service the product
If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.

Using a calling card for a long distance fax

It will surely help if you are using a calling card that has a pinless dialing feature where you don't need to dial your pin. I use Onesuite.com calling card and it has that feature and sending a fax through regular fax machine is easier than having to dial your pin midpoint.
