The rubber plug below the spacebar button is faulty. The button needs to be removed gently and the rubber plug below it which touches the board below should be cleaned. If this does not solve the issue the rubber plug below the button needs to be replaced. Its a common problem.

Its possible that something is stuck underneath the space bar key...
First shut down your computer.. wait for around 20 seconds to make sure that your hard drive has completely stopped spinning. press any button near the space bar key.... lift your computer up then start shaking it until you see something come out.. the key that you are pressing will give way to the falling object.
If you think that there is nothing stuck under the spacebar key. try to press it and give it a little bit of force. If this doesn't work, you probably need to call for a technician to have it fixed.
If your computer is still under warranty. you might want to contact dell and tell them that your spacebar key is stuck.. they will replace the entire keyboard for you.. free of charge...
I hope this helps... best wishes...
It seems like your space bar is damaged, you can use the on screen key board on windows vista, try unplugging the keyboard for 30mins and try again.
