MX 3950D Philips - PS3 no sound

MX 3950D Philips Home Theatre receiver (no HDMI, no Optical, only Coaxial DTS), a 42" Sharp (3 HDMI, no Optical, 1 Coaxial DTS), and a Playstation 3.

For the life of me, I cannot get any sound to play from the PS3 to the MX 3950D.

My XBox360 will work but its not using HDMI to the TV, using the old Yellow Video, Red/White Audio cables. But the MX 3950D plays the audio over the Digital Coax.

Basic Cable plays over the Digital Coax.

PS3 will not.... I feel it may be a audio setting I'm missing on the PS3.. but I tap. The MX 3950D keeps saying on its display "No Valid Signal"

Thanks for any input.

Aside from the xbox360 working via the coaxial digital cable. I got the PS3 to work this way.

I had to use the supplied SCART > (Y-video) (Red-Audio) (White-Audio) cable. Basically plugged this in from the PS3 directly to the MX 3950D Aux (Auxiliary) audio input.

On the PS3 audio settings menu, switched from HDMI to the 3rd option SCART.

Turn on the MX 3950D and set to Aux. Bang, got sound again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I missed this cause I "assumed" the video/audio cable that came with the PS3 was a HDMI to Audio/Video cable, and didn't even see the SCART port in the back of the PS3. So I thought I didn't want to lose 1080p ..etc etc. Anyways. MX 3950D still good =)

I have an RCA home theatre...model rt2910. I have hooked my PS3 via HDMI to the TV for the video and used an optical cable for the audio. I set the PS3 to send video via HDMI and audio via optical cable....

You should have the HDMI plugged into the Home theater unit. The theater unit then is attached to the TV using the HDMI out.
The home theater unit passes the HDMI through to the TV while playing the audio for you.
You will likely need to select the correct source on your RT2910.
Here is a link to the manual.

See the section entitled "Connecting to HDMI Components" for an illustration of what I have described above.

Didn't supporting DTS when playing DTS filims no sound is hearing i would like to make DTS support on my dvd philips any codecs for that or any other way?

Maybe your player, simply does not decode dts streams.
All you need to do is to buy a decent receiver with digital inputs.Connect player to receiver using an optical or coaxial cable[or hdmi 1.3/1.4 cable] and let the receiver do the dts decoding......
Don't forget:sett the audio output in your player to "bitstream".

NO OPTICAL SOUND I connected HDMI from reciever to TV, HDMI from PS3 to TV, Optical from PS3 to Receiver (PS3 Sound settings switched to Optical, with Dolby Digital 5.1CH, and Dolby DTS 5.1 selected) ...

Hello,
I think your problem might be at the digital audio setup at the receiver. To fix this, go into the setup under digital audio and make sure that the input that your connected to is set to optical, not analog or coaxial. Example if your plugged into video 1, make sure that the audio setting corresponds to the optical input where your connected. Video 1-optical-1.

RX-V465 Yamaha Reciver we can get picture but no sound w/PS3

Check HDMI Sound settings:
Enter Setup menu via remote, then Func. Setup / HDMI / Audio. You can choose from Amp (sound will be played via Yamaha), TV (sound will go straight via HDMI out to your TV and not play on Yamaha) and Amp+TV (Yamaha will play the sound and also pass it to the TV).
Also what is your source? DVD or some network player? For example Yamaha cannot decode audio in AAC or other computer formats, so be sure to change the audio settings of your player to output PCM and not raw/bitstream.

What kind of optical or coaxial cable do i need to get exces to dts and dolby digital

To get DTS and Dolby Digital sound you will need one of a few types of digital cable to connect the digital output on a device to a digital decoder or receiver. One type of digital cable is the SPDIF Coaxial, which is a single cable that can transmit high quality digital audio. Another cable for digital sound is the Toslink Optical cable which uses plastic or glass fibres depending on the cost to transmit light which is then decoded into sound information. With optical cables the signal can break if the cables are bent too much. The other cable that can be used is the HDMI cable, this is used to stream HD video and HD sound formats such as DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD, these can of course stream the standard Dolby Digital and DTS signals, but for what it is worth I would recomend a SPDIF Coaxial cable. These can be found at hi-fi shops and places such as Maplins or Ebay. They are also cheaper than the other digital cables and more reliable than optical ones. Any type will do as long as you have a decoder or home receiver which can convert the digital information into sound. Infact you can use an RCA composite cable and connect that into the coaxial ports at either end. This will transmit the digital information, but not as good quality as a proper coaxial cable, but you still get the DTS and Dolby Digital formats with full surround sound. I hope that this helps.

Connect home theatre to 32" lcd to ps3

Depending on the year of your model of VIZIO your digital optical output may be tied to the DTV input only. Meaning the only time you will have audio coming out of the digital optical output is when your using the tuner and your on a digital channel. If your television is newer and the digital optical output is in white on the back of the television than it is tied to HDMI and the DTV Tuner and you will pass audio through the digital optical output when using HDMI or the Digital Tuner.

Now to get connect the HT: Normally you would run a digital optical cable from the source device to the home theatre system. Meaning if it was a PS3 you would run a optical cable from the Digital Out on the back of the PS3 to the Digital In on the Home Theatre receiver. If it was a DVD player than you would run the optical cable from the DVD player to the HT receiver. If you have a newer VIZIO and the optical output is in white and not black than you can run HDMI from the PS3 to the VIZIO and then run a optical cable from the VIZIO to the Home theater receiver.

You will have to adjust the audio setting in the PS3 to run audio out of the HDMI port if it is set to run audio out of the Digital Out or AV out. Also, if your going to run audio from the PS3 to the HT receiver through the Digital Out then you need to change the audio setting in the PS3 to Digital Out.

1. Select (Sound Settings) under (Settings) in the home menu.
2. Select [Audio Output Settings].
3. Select the input connector on the audio device.

Channel numbers and audio formats that are supported vary depending on the connector in use. AV is 2 ch. only, Digital Out is 2 ch. & 5.1 ch, and HDMI is upto 7.1.
