Leap reader won't turn on

My son's brand new Leapfrog Leapreader won't turn on. The orange charge light will come on when charging via usb, and whilst plugged in will briefly turn red if you hold the on/off button. Can not get system to work at all, or computer to recognise the usb plugged in?

I have the same problem as well, and none of the comments below apply at all. They appear to be referring to a completely different question.

My experience is that letting it charge for some tens of minutes is needed for it to start, even when plugged into the USB port.

Let it charge for a least an hour. I was concerned that it was broken after reading some comments on the net. It was not - have patience before ringing customer services - I wish I had charged it before Christmas Day though!!!!

The pen wouldn't launch from app on the desktop or turn on manually for me either, You need to launch it through their website, it's a rollover button top right on the website page 'Launch Leapfrog Connect' the pen then auto turns itself on!

This is the third Leapfrog toy we are getting and 2 out of 3 have been junk. I wouldn't buy this brand at all but it was a christmas present so we got it. I could not get it to work on one of our computers (windows 8), but on the other one (much older computer) eventually it worked. In fact I was pressing the on/off button like mad as I was getting quite frustrated with it and it came on. Their application is very poor with no feedback what it is doing, it gives no sign that the toy is plugged in even though it is, then all of a sudden after about 3 minutes it decides to cooperate - very frustrating. And all this for what?? so that I can install some story and a song. Why cant it come with these things preloaded and ready to go?? Leapfrog is an evil company.

Awful product. Simply not fit for purpose. Had several of the frequently seen issues. Spent a significant amount of time following all advice on the official help and this forum. It should not be this difficult to use a product aimed at small children. Very frustrating. Very disappointed daughter. My advice - get a refund!

SOURCE: I have a problem with Leapster Explorer. After

You have to keep clicking the arrow underneath the message. Each time your child plays, you earn 60 tokens or whatever. You have to click through all of those messages until you can play. It's confusing, because all of the messages or the same, but keep clicking that right arrow and eventually you'll be done!

SOURCE: My son's leapfrog didj will

This happened with the first Didj we bought. Struggled to open the battery case with the stupid recommended dime. [Use a screwdriver instead - better able to push down the lever inside the case.] The 1st Didj never turned on. Totally dead. Exchanged it. The second Didj was easier to open compartment to install batteries and turned on immediately. Reommend you take it back.

SOURCE: My daughter's Leap Frog Tag reader pen will simply

Hello I will try to help you. If the pen was working up until the batteries died then the problem logically would be solved by putting in new batteries. That said, remove the "new" batteries and install them in another device to be sure that they are good. Some new batteries die in the package before being used.

Then make sure you are putting the batteries in correctly, pay attention to the + and -.

Finally, you can clean the ends of the battery chamber by using a pencil eraser and rubbing it on the metal contacts.

Let me know if one of these things fixes your problem as I have additional ideas.

Leapreader won't turn off

Try pressing the on/off button to turn it off. I had a same problem. I depressed the on/off button for ~6 second or so and the device turned off. When I turned on again, the LeapReader no longer had a white light and was recognized by my computer.
