No sound from TV to home theatre system

We have connectecd our Panasonic PT860, but we can not get sound from our TV to go through the Panasonic speakers. We have connected as per the instructions along with the optical connection and the HDMI connection. Our TV is a samsung LED TV. The PT860 plays music and DVD with surround sound, but not TV sound (surround or otherwise)

You need an optical cable - easily found from Currys etc - £10 or £11

Panasonic sa-pt860 speakers crackling

Panasonic SC PT860 Manuals
The above link is the owner's manual - it may help.
Here are some other ideas:
Try to find out if the crackling sound is coming from all speakers or just one - you may just have one bad speaker.
If the crackling happens at high volume settings, you may be overdriving the system - you'll just have to turn it down!
Try turning down the bass or the subwoofer level.
Is the crackling present with all sources (TV, cable, DVD, bluetooth)?
