This lens has a zoom ratio of 4 :1 or 4 times.

Basically 75mm x 2 = 150mm
150mm x 2 = 300mm
I hope that helps,
Ian

I think..lens with those mm range counts here...like..if u 've got 18-50mm then its 50/18 = 2.7 zoom and if 18-300mm then 300/18 = 16.666 zoom..that is 2.7X and 16.6X...i believe !

The Bushnell Trophy XLT comes with both a hard-side case and a soft side case. Zooming of Nikon D40 SLR Camera

You need to be more specific about which lens you've got! I'm guessing you've probably got the 18-55mm which is the most popular lens to be supplied with the kits.

From what you describe, the lens is working correctly. The problem is the maximum focal length of the lens (55mm) is not going to give you massive magnification. (Basically, the bigger the number, the more powerful the zoom.)

The sort of lenses that you can snoop on someone from half a mile away are going to be 300mm upwards.

This is one of the reasons that you can change the lens on an SLR camera. Now you might ask, if that's the case, why they don't make a 18-500mm lens. The problem is that the bigger the range of the zoom, the more the image quality suffers, so you tend to find the zoom lenses go up in a number of steps.

If you need more magnification, the only answer is to buy a more powerful lens I'm afraid :-(

Hope this helps,

Matt

If you zoom to less than 12x

The macro setting on the fz series allows you to get within a couple of centimeters of the subject and obtain focus. That is pretty close. That is too close. The camera will throw a shadow. You need some room. Most high zoom cameras (notably Olympus) have macro capabilty throughout the zoom which not only increases the magnification but also allows you (requires you) to put some distance between the lens and the subject. The panasonic fz series is different. They do not have macroability at zooms greater than 2x-3x. Beyond that there is no increase in magnification. Why? I dont know. Maybe this feature was designed on a Monday. Fortunately this can all be rectified with the use of a closeup lens. Now the fz series will react like most other high zoom cameras and do it well. The Olympus b-macro is such a lens. There are many others

Super Zoom

In addition to the optical zoom, this camera is equipped with a super zoom and digital zoom for taking telephoto and wide-angle shots. The super zoom and digital zoom cannot be used at the same time. Super zoom is used to extend the optical zoom up to 14× magnification. However, the resolution is automatically fixed at 1600 ×1200. Digital Zoom is used to extend the maximum optical zoom to approximately 40x. However, pictures taken with the digital zoom may appear grainy. Camera shake is likely to occur at these higher magnifications, please see “camera shake” question for further details on this.

Differences between Optical Zoom and Digital Zoom

When you change the focal length of a zoom lens, the subject is magnified. Optical zoom replicates the zoom of a 35mm camera. Digital zoom takes a portion of the image's data and displays it at full size, producing a magnification of the original image, similar to the effect of using a telephoto lens. However, the process is different from the magnification produced using the camera's optical zoom, and the stronger the digital zoom, the more the image will degrade.
