No startup disk is available -- the hard drive is either corrupt, dead, or not connected properly.

Hard drive is dead or the signal from the hard drive is not being read by the ide controller. I'm working on a MacBook 13 inch right now with the same issue. I had a spare hard drive and a windows Vista disc, so I installed the hard drive and inserted the vista install disc and the laptop loaded and installed Vista on the Mac with no issues. I took the hard drive from the Mac and attached an adapter to it and ran it through a usb on another laptop and the laptop could not read the files on the drive....so, the drive was bad.

It sounds like the system has corrupted. What I would do is to get your instal disk to boot up holding down the c key on your keyboard. Once you have booted up go to the file menu and run disk utility to verify and repair the hard drive. Then go to the instal menu and install a fresh system remembering to preserve the users data so you do not wipe anything. Hopefully this will work.

Start by seeing if your volume is not turned down.
If this does not help, go to settings and see what it says next to the soundcard: a questionmark or a red cross next to it probably means that you need to re-install drivers for the soundcard

The questionmark tab, the next 2 left of that tab and the 2 tabs above are in French. Pls. make them show up in english
go to start>control panel>regional settings> and make sure that all the tabs are set to english
