You can go to any Home Depot and buy compressor oil for your compressor. Your operators manual should tell you what the level should be, however if you don't have one, filling it with oil until it fills the glass tube about half way should be sufficient.

There is a wide choice of air compressors on the market but in my opinion, it even makes choosing more difficult. Once I bought PORTER-CABLE C2002 just because I read about it a random review and it was completely right. So, it is better to read reviews every time when you make a serious purchase

Bought just the firs one I managed to find and now it seems like the compressor doesn't work as good as before. Maybe it wasn't the best oil to get so now I am a bit more concerned and I will be reading reviews before getting what I need.

How do I check the oil level

Ummm. If you looked in the sight glass, you just DID check the oil level. If you didn't see anything, then there wasn't any, or enough oil! Better add some before you run it again. The oil should be about half way up the sight glass, and don't overfill. Make SURE you use the RIGHT TYPE, according to the manufacturer's directions. The reason most compressors use special oil, is because the valves get MUCH HOTTER than the valves in an internal combustion engine. Don't think it doesn't matter. Get the right oil. And next time, don't ask a silly question like that.

I used compressor 3 wks ago and worked great. Now will not compress air above 25 psi.changed regulator OK,removed air intake filter,it has suchion.removed outlet tube, bloweds air.Oil in site glass.I did...

Mike:

If you have air blowing out of the oil filler cap, I would suspect that the piston rings are shot. The piston rings are supposed to keep the compressed air above the piston, and air seems to be leaking past the piston rings into the crank case.

I have an old type 30 model ingersoll rand air compressor. It has not run for years, we just wired it up and ran it for about 5 minutes. After that, I thought I better check the oil level... There does...

Alot of the older units did not have a sight glass. They had a dip stick on the fill plug. Over the years they broke off or the oil fill plug was replaced with a newer type that does not have the dip stick. To answer your question dip stick or not I always fill with oil to the bottom of the threads on the fill plug. You should remove the plug and check the oil level before each use on and older unit like this until you have a good handle on how much oil it uses. you may also be able to remove a plug usually on the front of the case lower left side and install a sight glass or low oil level switch. Have a good day!!

What level should the oil be in the view sight and what type of oil should be used to fill if needed?

Your oil level should be right in the middl of the sight glass as per the type of oil I'm sure Craftsman has there brand of oil they suggest. But any good quality compressor oil will work.

Mac 5200--what type of oil and how much oil does it take?

Use air compressor oil only, motor oils like 10W-30 will leave carbon deposits on components and reduce their performance and compressor life. No manual lists an exact amount of oil to put in, they just say fill until the oil is half way up the sight glass. It's usually +/- one cup depending on the model, some take as much as one pint. Go by the sight glass for the best performance and to protect your compressor.

Dont know what kind of oil to put in my makita mac2400r compresso

If your compressor is used all day purchase synthetic blend compressor oil sold at lowes and other stores. It will increase the life of your machine. Sells for about $7. for 16oz. For normal use use standard air compressor oil sold at lowes, home depot and even at wal mart. Wal mart's Super Tech Air Compressor oil sells for less than $3. and works well. Do not use motor oil with detergent as this type of oil causes carbon deposits to build-up in the head and discharge hose which will eventually clog the check valve and lower efficiency. If you remove the plastic sight glass, use caution, because this part easily cracks. Purchase a spare sight glass and keep in your tool box. Good luck

Type of oil

Air compressor pumps can use different grades of oil depending on weather conditions and usage, however do not use engine oil. Some Ingersol Rand pumps use a synthetic oil available through WWGrainger on the web. (generally not model specific) If this pump is lightly used you can use the less expensive compressor oil sold at Lowes lumber made by Campbel Hausfeld. It sells for less than $3.00 a bottle. Generally speaking, under normal weather conditions and light duty use, do not worry about the weight of the oil; just make sure that it stays clean and at the right level. If your compressor is running hot, it may be due to other problems like the check valve, head gaskets leaking between cylinders or chambers or high usage. If, however you just want the best oil for your compressor, use the synthetic. It is usually colored blue or green. This oil is special formulation to prevent breakdown in high heat and will not allow carbon for form on parts or inside of the hoses. enjoy
