Hitachi television repair

The color convergence seems to be on the fritz. all of the images on the screen have red blue and green shadows around them. I have tried the magic focus system, but it shuts down quickly and the number 5 pops up on the lower right portion of the screen. Is there a cheap fix?

Same issue but when using the magic focus it goes thru blue and green quickly and takes 20-30 seconds to get through the red. Magic focus does not fix. Alignment of colors in center appear closer to normal but red aligns higher toward bottom of screen and red aligns lower toward top of screen.

  • mateomasc Nov 06, 2007

my colors are not in sync anymore and my magic focus doesn't work after a few seconds on magic focus 5 just apears on the bottom of the scream.

hitachi 53 projection tv with major convergence problem. red image is approximately 2" to the right of other images. tried the magic button to no avail. Wonder what next step is if any.

  • dgdick Dec 23, 2007

hitachi model 51SWX20B purchased 3/6/03. Magic Focus gets 5 in lower left of screen. Tried manual focus, and green lines on left side of screen are wavy. Aligned red and blue, so picture is clear, but left side of screen is vertically wavy.

  • CTurp Feb 23, 2008

I'm having a similar problem. Mine is a green red ghosting. The red seems to be ghosting about 2 inches below the green across the top third of the screen. I opened up the TV and there is a distinct 1/4 grayish black line running just to the left of center on the red lens. Any relation to my problem? How can I fix this? Is it simply out of convergence? How could this just happen one day? Any help, suggestions or input is greatly appreciated.

I have ghosts when i first my tv on after 20 min i use majic focus and that clears the problem but if i turn the tv set off and back on the ghst are there

Yes, i too have the same problem. I cannot converge the 3 colors using the interface, so I wonder if it may be a problem with the lamps. The green seems to be the most off.

color is fuzzy and the lines on the tv is wavey--how do i fix the convergence or where do i go to get instructions on doing this on a hitachi model 50ux22ba

  • burketb May 04, 2009

I have a hitachi 53sdx89ba rear projection TV. I have convergence issues - primarily in red. After hours of on-line research, I have replaced both convergence IC's (110's upgraded to STK 394 160 E). I have carefully checked all resistors and replaced bad RK46 (1.5ohm, 1W). My operating manual and available service manuals (bought on-line) and instructions from TV Repair Kits.com do not seem to work for manual DCAM adjustment on this Hitachi TV. For example, if I press and hold Majic Focus I get two screens, first Center Mode then Static mode, but I can not move red cross or red line with any buttons on remote. These screens on not described in service manual, etc. I can not access the grid mode that is supposedly available. For example, the instructions from TV Repair Kits that begins:

Press Magic Focus to begin magic focus
    3) Press magic focus again during the magic focus process to get the "stop" screen
    4) While stop screen is up, press STATUS or INFO on the remote control (R/C) to bring you to DCAM mode and
    the service grid

... do not give access to service grid.

I have read countless blogs and boards and I can not determine if the hardware fix is bad (I find this hard to believe as I carefully soldered the two IC's in and checked and rechecked all the IC board resistors) or if I have a Software/Menu access issue. I have seen one poster say a fuse on the convergence board could be out, but I can not find the fuse.

Any suggestions appreciated. I have about 30 hours into this repair and am too stubborn to give up now.

The convergence ic's need to be replaced. There may also be several resistors in the same area that are burned and need to be replaced.

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

77ea520.jpg
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replacedhitachi television repair - 2c07611.png common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from
www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

I have one of these sets and after replacing the convergence ic's you need to get into the factory menu's and this is done by taking the speaker cover off and then the center panel behind the speaker cover as you look in to the set at the convergence board you will see a little green button on the left corner of the convergence board towards the front of the set. There are specific procedures to set the convergence in the factory menu's but if you go slow and pay attention it can be done in a relativly short time.

I had the same problem. I could not afford a new TV.
I called Hitachi for a local Hitachi repair center.
They replaced the convergence modules and cleaned the picture tubes.
They soldered some other items.
They explained that the convergence modules are the common repair for these TVs.
This repair is not for the non-professional.
The costs $512 with tax and one hour. I live in the New York Area.
The cost may be different in other areas.
$500 repair vs $1500 new TV?
Now my TV is like new.
I hope this helps.

I have a HCN4727w samsung. Red/green shadowing. Bowed image

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

53 inch projection tv...seems like the color red and color blue have shifted giving me a picture with red and blue shadows

For CRT projection TV's, this indicates that the Green picture tube is burned (warn out). The less green that strikes the screen, the more redish the image will look. You will need to find an old school TV repair shop that knows how to replace picture tubes.
In the case of a DLP style TV, the color wheel needs replacing.

Color and Image are Bad!

Convergence IC's are bad or poor solder connection, IC's are large chips with heatsink mounted to them, re solder them to board, if not fixed replace IC's, should be 392-110s, but check them number is on the IC itself.

Sounds like the convergence needs adjustment. You can do this through the menu-follow the on screen instructions. The idea is to line up the red, green, & blue.
