Portable Hard Disk not being recognised

I have a portable 60 gb hard disk. ( Brand Buffalo). When I switched on the computer my keyboard would not function and I noticed that my portable hard disk was not showing up in explorer. When I rebooted, the keyboard started doing fine but the hard disk is still not showing up. I changed the case thinking that it might be the case. But that does not seem to be the problem .

I have important data on it...any advice as to how to get it working or just recover the data.

If you cannot get the USB connection working, you can recover the data by taking the drive out of the case and connecting it directly to the PC as a second drive.  Make sure the jumper settings are correct for use as a second drive.  You can get the drive information and jumper settings from the web site of the drive manufacturer.

My external buffalo hard drive is not being recognised by my laptop

Right click on My Computer (or Computer is Vista/7) and select Management from the menu. Click to expand Storage and then click on Disk Management underneath it. It may take a couple of seconds for the area on the right to populate.Scroll down in the lower pane and see if you can locate your external hard drive in the list. When you locate it, right click in the left area that says Disk # and see if there is an option to Initalize the disk. Click on Initalize.

My buffalo external Hard disk is not working in the Philips DVD player. 4 gb pen drive of Sony is working. What is the problem..? how can I correct it........?

Some usb input ports on dvd players, projectors, etc. have a limit to what size it will read from. Right now it's usually 4 gb to 32 gb.

PC not recognising Iomega Prestige 320gb usb portable hard drive. I've connected it all up, disconnected, reconnected, rebooted the computer, but the drive is just not recognised and does not show up in...

Does the drive show in Device Manager? Right click on 'My Computer' and select properties, the open device manager.. Navigate down to Disk Drives or Hard Drives, click on the plus sign and see if your drive is listed. If it is, then right click on the drive name and open properties for the drive. Click on the 'Volumes' tab and hit the 'Populate Button'. It may be the disk just needs initialising, then reformatting before you can use it. If it does need initializing, a wizard should appear to guide you through the process!
If this doesn't solve your problem, try using a different USB cable and/or USB ports on your computer, and ensure to unplug all other USB devices other than keyboard & mouse.

I can`t see the harddrive from my PC

Try looking for the drive in the "Disk Management".
Right click on "My Computer" or "Computer" and select "Manage" then select the "Disk Management" item.

If you can see the drive, but there is no drive letter assigned, you may need to format it for your operating system or create an accessible partition on the drive. You can access all these options by right clicking on the drive from the "disk management" screen that you should be on.

mine needed to be initialized (by right clicking on it) and then i formated it

Good Luck!
