Hi I connected my LG wireless system to my plasma via HDMI cable.
Playing DVD's works fine , but when I change to my normal digital tv channels I can't get the sound to play through my surround sound system.
On the display of the dvd player it says OPTICAL.
Do I need to get me an optical cable?
SOURCE: Vizio SV470XVT will not output Dolby 5.1 from optical out..
TV's only will output 5.1 from HD stations. If you have a DVD player, XBOX 360, etc connected through HDMI, then the TV will only send stereo PCM through the optical out.

If you know it isn't the component at the other end of the HDMI cable, then the TV likely needs to be repaired. There are only a couple of HDMI issues that can be addressed with any type of in-home troubleshooting. To be sure, call LG tech support at 800-243-0000. If there is anything that can be done without having the unit repaired, they will be able to tell you what that is.

SOURCE: I have a brand new LG 50 plasma and a Bravia Sony
you may have to set the input value on the bravia for optical on the input from the cable box. sometimes there is more than one way for a particular input to receive an audio signal, you may have rca(red and white), a black or orange rca type for digital, and then the optical. i would suspect you have to tell the bravia how the sound is inputed into the bravia. also , just a thought.... on the cable box there should be a volume control on the front of the box........ make sure the cable box volume is ALL the way up (it is the preamp volume).

As long as your 50 in. LG TV has an Optical Out, and your DVD surround sound receiver has an Optical Input, you can connect the 2 using a Digital Optical TOSlink Cable.
