This is what I have done already 1. removed intake to check for worn hoses and clean intake 2. replaced crank vent valve 3. replace o-ring on dipstick tube 4. made sure that return on dipstick tube was open 5. clean throttle valves 6. clean temp sensor on intake 7. Fitted new plugs tested vehicle, was fine for about 2 km but then started to smoke heavy again and was misfiring Next step 8. found oil again in intake but never cleaned it. 9. replaced o-rings on pipe from vent valve to tappet cover 10. replaced tappet cover gasket with sparkplug tube seals 11. drained oil and replace with new oil and engine flash 12. new sparkplugs were carbon and was cleaned tested vehicle again. It drives fine for a distance, but then give one smoke ball and then stops again, but then the plugs are carbon again and misfires. Could that be still from old oil still in the intake, because the oil level on the dipstick stays the same And I hear this funny sound coming from the crank vent valve, that sucking sound when it opens and closes

There's a couple of things to look at. First I'd check the valve you have already put in seals ok. I'd also check the oil pressure. (If there are any blocked oil ways in the engine it could cause a build-up of pressure, Also means some of the engine isn't getting oil).

When you took the Rocker cover off was there any oil gunk ?

  • Steve
    Steve Dec 19, 2013

It maybe worth giving the engine a good oil change (With a good engine flush)

  • Bertie
    Bertie Dec 19, 2013

when the tappet cover were off, you could see the oil slug everywhere

  • Steve
    Steve Dec 19, 2013

Then it seems that is your problem. You need to give the engine a REALLY godd flush. I'd also (If it was my car) take off the sump & give the oil pump pick-up filter a good clean.

There's is a good chance some of your engine isn't getting the oil it needs, So I wouldn't recomend driving it until this is sorted.

what do i use to flush this engine and how many time do i have to do it?

  • Steve
    Steve Dec 19, 2013

There is a couple of good flushes you can buy from your local car shop (Wynn's are a well known one)

  • Steve
    Steve Dec 19, 2013

I couldn't tell you how many time you need to flush your engine, As I don't know how bad it is.

  • Steve
    Steve Dec 19, 2013

However, i would do a minmum of two. A can of engine flush in the oil you have in it now.

  • Steve
    Steve Dec 19, 2013

Then put some cheap oil in it run it for a week or so, then once again put in some engine flush & flush the engine out,

  • Steve
    Steve Dec 19, 2013

Then put some goon quality oil in (Check with your car handbook to see if it happy with full synthetic)

  • Steve
    Steve Dec 19, 2013

However, before you do the engine flush, It maybe worth you cleaning out the breather pipes, Rocker cover, etc of any gunk first.

It's quite possible that the oil in the intake could have something to do with it. However, It also sounds as if you may have one or more oil ways blocked. I'd recommend you let a garage check it over (They can do a vacuum test on it)

first check the firing order plug wires, then check the timing , not sure of this but check the timing by lossening the distributor while enging is running and manually rotate the distrubutor to adjust timing, by ear w/o a timing light. maybe need to be retarded or advance a bit. check auto maintence manual for firing order.

SOURCE: White smoke and the smell

Bradley,
You have stated two problems. Coming to second first. Smell of burning rubber. in the car rubber is only at two places where it can burn, The tyres, unlikely as you have not commented upon your driving habits. Some people like to rev the engine so much before take off that the tyres go burning for the first few hundred meters. And then there is rubber on the wires and cables. You have to check the wires for any heat while the engine is running.
Coming to the first now. White smoke is generally of unburnt fiel and not oil. Oil alwayd give black smoke and that is the indication you get when the exhaust is giving black smoke. That means that the engine is consuming oil. if it is white then that indicates that the engine is cold and burning more gas/diesel. Is your a diesel vehicle?? But as you say it from under the hood. And that too behind the engine block. May be that the gasket is leaking from somewhere. If you could check the engine oil level for a few days early in the morning before starting the engine. If the level drops and the exhaust tail pipe does not blacken your finger when you rub it in it would mean that the oil is being burnt. Now what I suggest is that with the engine running and hand brakes on, go under the car with hood open and try to locate the source of the smoke. I am sure you would be able to locate it.
Then we talk again.

SOURCE: Lack of power, exhaust smoke and engine miss

Just an idea but the Ford Mondeo ( european car ) from which I believe your engine
is taken has a habit of splitting a low pressure tube at the back
of the engine this is a relatively
cheap, easy fix. The other symptom this used to throw up was a
little more black smoke from the exhaust and a pacing/ surging from
the engine.

Smoke from where exactly? Under the hood? From the exhaust? You need to be more specific.

White smoke coming out of my 2005 bmw 320i e90, it mostly happens like a big cloud when on hills and only little on flat surfaces, mechanics can't seem to diagnose it nor I dunno if their being oblivious...

This could be two problems occuring, 1. Head Gasket leaking intermitantly (ie) Replace Head Gasket & skim head. 2. Replace the oil separation Valve or also known as Crank Case ventilation Valve.
This valve opens & closes, can be glued shut with carbon build up. Then when engine comes under load & elevated the oil from crank vent pipe can't escape but events in burning of as white smoke.

I am experiencing problems with my BMW 320i - 2004 model. It does not start easily. When it starts, a blue fuel smoke comes from the exhaust. this causes the car also to be heavy on fuel consumptio

Blue smoke is caused by oil. Rich running causes black smoke and will set the check engine light. Rich running (black smoke) on startup could be caused by a leaking injector. The blue smoke puff at startup is likely valve stem seals leaking or a bad crank case vent malfunction and sucking oil into the manifold at high vacuum conditions.

Serious...no. A problem..yes. You may have hardened valve stem seals or a bad crankcase vent valve...either way it needs fixed.

Eventually the engine will build up burnt oil residue in the combustion chambers and foul spark plugs. It is also ******* those expensive catalytic converters under the car.

These do suffer from engine crank case vent failure quite often although this will trip a code and light the Check Engine lamp.

Oil filler cap creamy not overheating dipstick and water levels fine just started running of cylinder had been odd puffs of smoke

If the car is used mostly for short trips, a creamy oil cap is not unusual. Try to use this car for the occasional long trip to dry it out. The concern is that the oily sludge will fill up the tube that runs from the front corner of the valve cover down to the crankcase ventillation valve under the intake manifold. If that hose plugs up (typically only happens if the sludge freezes) the system can start sucking oil up through the oil drain from the crankcase ventilation valve and pumping it into the intake manifold. This problem is rare, usually seen only in 6 cyl BMW SUVs that are used for running errands in mountain communities and never really warm up, but it can happen if you have a lot of water/oil sludge buildup.
The rest of your problem statement is not completely clear. Missing a cylinder when cold is very common and may be caused by any one of several problems. If it smooths out after a minute or two, it is not a big concern. If the car misses on a cylinder after it is warm, check the age of your spark plugs, they should be replaced every 50k miles or so. Try pouring some fuel injector cleaner (Techron is the most popular) through it. A weak coil is also a possibility Early e46s had some coil problems, but I would expect that if you were going to have coil problems, they would have flared up long before now unless this is a really low mileage car..
The reference to odd puffs of smoke is a little unusual, but it is what reminded me of the possible problem with sludge plugging up the crankcase vent line. I suggest that you pull that line off the front of the valve cover and look inside. If it is full of sludge, get that system cleaned out.

Have engine problem no4 spark plug oiling up makes car smoke and missfire is the problem oil crake case breather

check hoses connected to intake manifold for oil. If none have oil, you probably have a worn out valve guide. Do you have high mileage? Only way to fix this is to remove the head and knurl or replace quide. Usually a good time to do a complete valve job. If you have more questions, please let me know.

My car is using a lot of oil and the mechanic insists that there is no leaks visible. what can be the problem?

How much is it losing? Believe it or not it is common for some cars to have significant loss through either Blow By, a fault in the emissions system--or if it's a BMW, have the positive crankcase vent valve checked, the oil seperator diaphram could be deteriorated----is it blowing white smoke?

Valve train noise, engine oil loss, no leak

It is burning the oil,and it is not noticable ,and the oil pump is either weak,or the cam/crank,rod bearings are worn, and the pressure does not make it up yo the valve train.
