I have Merrit sewing machine bought in 1974 I have lost the instruction manual, it has no number just says Merritt made in Italy on the front. I need a zipper foot but can't get one, John Lewis said the one they sell wouldn't fit an old Machine!! Can anyone help??
Go to any sewing machine store and buy a LOW SHANK adjustable zipper foot. This foot will screw on and fits almost everything. Yes, it's an older machine but you can still get most parts for it. Especially feet.I think this machine has snap on feet, so If you want an original foot take the ankle with you when you go to the shop to buy it. sewman7

Please add a comment with the model number of your sewing machine to find out if a different feed dog cover is needed for your Merritt. I hope this helps.
Here is a copy of your manual. http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/498_4205_4210.pdf
Most modern machines have snap off and snap on feet. Grasp the foot that is on there and push down. Then while lowering the foot, align the little bar on the zipper foot and watch it snap in. Easy.
You should be able to buy another foot, but you'll need to know if it is a high shank or a clip on style. Try this link to www.sewingpartsonline.comhttp://www.sewingpartsonline.com/pfaff-sewing-machine-presser-feet.aspx they have two invisible zipper feet and two clip on ones. Don't mention your model but you should be able to email and ask if you aren't sure. I'd expect that the feet would be interchangeable between the models in the same era as yours. Just ignore the long funny shaped feet, they are for Pfaff sergers.
Step 1
To
prepare the fabric for a centered zipper application, use the standard
presser foot to baste the opening of the fabric shut using 5/8 inch
seam allowance. Press the seam allowance open. Place the zipper teeth
side down on the seam allowance and pin the zipper to the seam
allowance only.
Step 2
Release
the standard presser foot from your machine. There may be a button or
lever behind the foot that you need to press. Put the standard foot in
its holder or someplace where it won’t get lost.
Step 3
Decide
which side of the machine you want to attach the zipper foot to. Zipper
feet are asymmetrical, with one side that’s wider than the other.
You’ll want to put the narrow side toward the zipper teeth, and the
wider side away from the zipper teeth.
Step 4
Attach
the zipper foot to the sewing machine. You may need to line up the bar
on the zipper foot with the presser foot holder, then lower the presser
foot by lowering the lever. Raise the presser foot and make sure the
zipper foot is securely attached.
Step 5
Place
the prepared fabric with the pinned zipper in the sewing machine. Lower
the needle into the zipper tape and the seam allowance only, then lower
the zipper foot. Stitch the zipper tape to the seam allowance. To sew
the other side of the zipper to the seam allowance, remove the zipper
foot from the sewing machine and install it on the other side of the
presser foot holder.
Step 6
Topstitch
the outside of the fabric to each side of the zipper tape, making sure
that the zipper foot is on the appropriate side of the machine for each
side. Remove the basting with a seam ripper.
