Must not have been much of a mechanic. If the engine runs and sounds fine sometimes and other times it doesn't then it does not sound like a mechanical problem with the engine. Sounds more like a issue with either the ignition system or fuel system.
It seems to be a common misconception that the remote is necessary to turn a device on. All devices have hard-wired power controls. Does THAT work? It is unclear which device (remote or the Cinemate) is malfunctioning. If the Cinemate won't turn on by its own power switch the remote won't magically bypass whatever the problem is.
The Cinemate Manual offers some steps to take if it won't turn on, as well as other guidance.
does your system have adequate ventilation? disconnect external devices, memory, expansion cards, hard drive and optical drive. then check if system will still turn off. if it still turns off, you will need to replace the motherboard. if it doesnt, try reconnecting the removed components one by one to determine which causes the issue.
Most likely a loss of refrigerant ( freon ) in the system. The A/C compressor uses a low pressure switch as a SAFETY to insure it wont turn on without freon in the system. Hope this helps.
