Hello:

>>The Following is a General Instruction File I Made to Perform this Repair. If you have Any Suggestions or Remarks, then Please Let me Know. Thanks.
>>**Remove the Boom/Shaft from the Engine. Remove the Mounting Bolts and the Boom and Center Drive Shaft should Slide Away from the Starter Housing Assembly.
>>**On Some Model Trimmers, there is a Torx Screw Inside the Coupling Drive that has to be Removed.
>>****There is also a Locking Screw on the Side of the Housing that is a Anti-Vibration Lock.****
>>Using the Breakdown as a Guide Remove the Starter Housing Assembly from the Engine Assembly.
>>Now Carefully/Slowly Remove the Pressure Plate Assembly from the Starter Housing.
>>The Spring May have Broken and Sometimes a Section will Jump Out when the Pressure Plate Assembly is Removed from the Starter Housing. When it Jumps, it Pushes the Recoil Pulley Out Also.
>>Look at the Direction of the Coil of the Spring in the Housing and Make an Arrow in the Direction of the Coil with a Magic Marker on the Inside of the Housing.
>>Remove the Broken Spring and Clean the Housing with Spray Lubrication. You can Use Solvent if Required, Just be Sure to Wipe it Before Assembly with Spray Lubricant. The New Spring should come with a Retainer that Holds it in a Circle.
>>If you have Removed the Spring from the Retainer, then Use a Piece of Plastic Pipe About 2" Long that is the Same Inside Diameter as the Retainer (Slightly Smaller than the Recess that the Spring Coils Into if you Lost the Retainer).
>>Coil the Spring Into the Pipe and then Set the Spring Into the Recess. Make Sure the Spring Tab of the Spring Engages the Spring Lock in the Recess.
>>Use a Socket to Hold the Spring in Place and Pull the Pipe Out of the Recess.
>>Lock the Pulley in Place.
>>Now Turn the Pulley in the Same Direction that the Pulley would Turn if the Rope was Turning it.
>>Once the Pulley will Turn No More, then Reverse Direction 1 or 2 Turns and Thread the New Rope Through the Hole in the Center of the Pulley and Out the Hole in the Blower Housing.
>>Pull the Rope Through Until it is Tight Against the Pulley. Now Tie a Slip Knot in the Rope to Hold the Pulley in Place While the Handle is Attached to the Rope.
>>Once the Handle is Attached, Release the Slip Knot and the Rope Should Retract Into the Housing. Reassemble the Blower Housing Onto the Engine.
>>On Some Models you May have to Install the Rope Before you Lock the Pulley in Place. If So, there is a U in the Pulley that the Rope is Held in While Turning the Pulley to Tighten the Spring.
The Following is a "General" "Chainsaw Clutch Removal" File. **To Hold the Crankshaft for Removal of the Clutch; Purchase a Bolt that is 3" to 4" Long and has the Same Diameter and Threads as the Spark Plug. Carefully Insert the Bolt Into the Engine Until it Contacts the Piston. If the Bolt is too Short, then Slowly Turn the Engine in the Same Direction you are Going to be Turning the Clutch Until the Piston Contacts the Bolt. Now to Remove the Clutch. If you do Not have the Clutch Tool for an Impact Wrench and are Doing this By Hand (no air compressor and/or not the correct socket), then Use a 2" Wide, Flat Chisel and a Shop Hammer or a 22oz Hammer and Hit the Outer Part of the Thick Ear in the Same Direction that the Engine Turns During Operation.**
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If I Missed Something or you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

Respectfully

Starter rope does not pull out

Either the recoil spring and system is jammed/damaged, or the engine is seized. What equipment is it on? You can find how to remove the pull-start assembly and see what is happening. Remove the spark plug and see if you can rotate the engine by hand (you may have to remove the starter assembly and cover, or if it has an output shaft such as a mower with no clutch, you can carefully turn the blade or shaft with plug OUT.) If the engine can turn, then it would be the starter. Likely it has damaged pawls or the spring has broken. Sometimes on old mowers, the rope jams up in there, or the spring rusts. Even dirt can build up in there from insects or dust.

I need to replace the pull chord and i cannot take it apart what do i nee to do? i own a poalan pro 035

http://www.mowerpartsweb.com/manuals/POULAN/PP035.PDF

here is an excellent break down of your trimmer, I will explain what has to be done.
First remove the four screws that hold the handle plastic housing that the throttle trigger is in to the base of the eng cover on shaft side, you may have to disconnect your throttle cable from carb. or from trigger assy, which ever is easier. then slide motor off shaft and set on bench, next you have to remove the clutch off the eng, so remove spark plug and stuff rope, clothesline what ever soft type rope you may have(nothing with wire or cable in it this will cause damage to cylinder) into spark plug hole , this keeps eng from rolling over while you are removing the allen screw that is inside the center of the clutch cover, turn counterclockwise to remove screw, next the clutch housing will come off after removing the center screw. then you are at the clutch itself take a screwdriver and give it a couple hard blows with hammer towards the left (counter clockwise) being carefull to only put screwdriver on edge of clutch and not on the dogs directly. next unscreww clutch off shaft and finally you remove I think it is four possibly five screws from plastic eng housing and the cover comes off and youn are finally there! next there is a plate inside there held on with 2 screws remove the carefully and carefully remove you spool without removing the rewind spring, and install the new rope, next put spool back in place and there is a cut out for rope on side of spool so once it is in place you can wind the spring clockwise i believe approx 3-4 turnes and tie your pull handle on it and put plate back over it and secure the 2 screws to it and route your wires accordingly to miss any movein parts. next check that the rope pulls out all the way and retracts all the way and doesen't bind up , if every thing is O.K. then reverse the procedure and you will have it back together in no time and running, make sure you hook up your on/off switch and carb. linkage. don't for get to rate this ...... Have Fun !

Pull string won;t recoil

The recoil spring has broken. These are available at any lawn mower parts supply store. The process of changing the spring is tedious but can be done by anyone with average mechanical ability. If you removed the recoil assy (and air shroud if it is riveted on) and took the assembly to a Lawn Mower Repair shop usually they will change out the spring while you wait. If you can't get the recoil assy off take the mower with you to the repair shop. Again most shops will fix it while you if wait but if they are very busy usually they are serviced within 24 hours.

If you do attempt this yourself check in the tips section of FixYa on how to change the recoil stater rope after replacement of the spring.

I highly recommend you replace the pull rope at the time of the recoil spring replacement.

One final note... there is a possibility that the pull rope spool has been damaged where the spring attaches.

Thanks for using FixYa,

Kelly

How to place back the spring and a new rope

First you take the unit apart at the engine/shaft junction. Take a #15 Torx screwdriver into the end of the clutch and remover the driver. Once the clutch is clear, you have to remove it. Some people put a bolt of the same thread size as the spark plug into the plug hole far enough to touch the piston. When that is done, take a piece of hardwood and spin the clutch off. Use a hammer if you need to. Next, pull apart the engine from the casing. You now have the rope and spring at the end. If the spring has not come out of the metal ring, LEAVE IT ALONE! Replace the rope and leave the rope off the spool. Now carefully place the spool onto the spring and wind the spring tight while holding the rope in the cutout provided at the edge of the spool. Once you have the spring wound up, CAREFULLY allow the rope to retract. Attach the spool and re-assemble the unit in the reverse order you took it apart. Hope this is enough info. Please use caution when working with the spring. Good luck...Lee

32cc Craftsman Brushwacker

You have to take the machine apart. The first thing is to separate the shaft from the engine. Then take off the shaft driver. There is a screw in the end. It takes a #15 TORX screwdriver. Once that is off, you have to spin off the clutch. To do that, hold the engine somehow and remove the clutch counter-clockwise. With that off, you can then remove the engine from the molding at the other end. The spool will be sitting on the rewind spring so BE CAREFUL. If the spring comes out it will be a big pain! Just lift the spool off, replace the rope and attach as the old one was. Now, you have the rope connected. Place the spool on the spring. Place the rope in the notch at the edge of the spool and slowly wind the spool on the spring. When you have it wound as far as you want, take the rope from the notch and into the spool. Allow the rope to rewind onto the spool. Put everything back as it was before you started and you have finished...Good luck...Lee

Start Pull cord replacement on John Deere s1400

Take the 4 bolts/screws loose that hold the shaft onto the weed-eater body, You will see the clutch drum, you need a long T20 TORX driver to loosen the screw in the center of the drum shaft. The screw probably won't come all the way out, so just pull the drum off as you loosen it.

Next you will see 3 flat clutch discs.

You may need to remove the spark plug and stuff some starter rope in the combustion chamber to keep the shaft from turning.

Unscrew these one at a time with a pair of large slip joint pliers. Be careful not to bend them and note which way they face. They unscrew clockwise I believe.

Once you have these out of the way, continue taking apart the plastic housing to gain access to the starter rope assembly. There is a spring under the rope reel, so remove the screw holding the reel in place and carefully remove the rope reel and spring.

Replace the rope, put the reel back in place and make sure the sping egages the little tab. Then wind it a few turns until there is moderate tension on the spring.

Feed the rope through the body and tie it to the T-handle. Replace the hold down screw that keeps the rope reel in place.

Test the pull tension before reassembly. It should retract the rope fully without too much tension and should not be loose. Lubricate the rope reel where it rubs against the housing with some light grade oil or lithium grease.

If everything functions, put it back together in reverse order.

Remove the rope from the combustion chamber and make sure there is no debris in it. Install the spark plug. You should be ready to go.

Handle came off starter rope and rope rewound on spool. Took off power boom and took out tork screws and loosened cover from engine, but there is a metal disc, looks like a clutch cover on the end of the...

You shouldn't have to remove it. Just wide the disk up again to get tension on the recoil spring (lots of tension... enough to pull the rope all the way back in). poke the rope back out the hole ( the hardest part of the job) and put the handle back on. You should be back in action
