First it is a 2001 45" rear projection Mitsubishi. The last year the screen was getting darker around the edges in a radial shape, then seemed to warm up and go away at first. Now it started to flicker at the upper 1/3 of the screen only? It comes & goes playing TV, DVD or Games. It does have a rainbow strip/line at top too. Original owner and It's never been moved except to vaccume. My wife says it's not worth having fixed or looked at with the prices of new TV's, but I like it.
You have what we call an intermittent connection internally. This is usually a cold solder joint, loose wire or corroded pin inside a connector.
They are usually very difficult to find, but once you find them, the are easy to fix.
You can try the Whacking procedure: Just bang around a few places with your fist to see if you can stop it. Try putting a book or magazine under one corner or another to see if the extra torque or twist on the chassis will get rid of it.
In the worst case you can take of the back cover and start probing around inside. If you take it to the repair shop they will charge you lots of labor because they must spend along time tracking it down.
If you want to try getting inside and finding it, please let me know and I will give you some step by step procedures on how to do it and how to avoid getting tangled up with the 35,000 volts inside your set!
