SOURCE: touchscreen on garmin nuvi 680 GPS stopped working

Try reseting the nuvi, there is a reset button on the bottom or on the back, some models have it on the front under the display cover.

if that doesn't help the digitizer which is the part on top of the lcd display that registers the touch could have failed and may need to be replaced.

I haven't seen many garmin repairers, you might have to get in touch with garmin about it, check ebay for replacement parts but if I remember correctly garmin takes care of it and don't distripute much parts.

No signal how do I fix it

You have not said what model garmin nuvi ?
The touchscreen on a Garmin nuvi GPS usually loses sensitivity or stops responding if it's lost calibration.
This usually happens after prolonged usage.
Touchscreen problems are also caused by dirt, smudges and improper care.
If your Garmin nuvi's screen isn't performing as expected, Garmin provides solutions and tips to not only improve the device's performance, but prevent premature wear and tear.
Calibrating the Screen

If the Garmin nuvi's touchscreen isn't working, you need to calibrate the screen.
Calibration resets and repositions the screen for optimal performance without deleting saved settings.
Before calibrating the screen, press and hold the "Power" button to turn off the device.
Pressing and holding the "Power" button again for about 30 seconds automatically displays the calibration screen.
Pressing the dot on the white screen calibrates the touchscreen automatically.

Updating Software.
If The Garmin nuvi's touchscreen is still unresponsive, updating the device's firmware to the latest version can solve operating system problems that lead to touchscreen problems.
Before updating the device's firmware, connect the GPS to the computer using the USB cable. When the computer detects the GPS, the "AutoPlay" menu appears on the screen.
Tapping the arrow on the menu automatically opens the "myGarmin Agent" download page.
From there, follow the prompts to update your Garmin nuvi's software quickly and safely.

Cleaning. In some cases, the Garmin nuvi's touchscreen won't respond to touch if the screen is dirty. Touchscreens are sensitive to dirt and smudges that decrease sensitivity.
If the screen is dirty, cleaning it with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth improves performance.
If the screen is severely dirty, using water, isopropyl alcohol or eyeglass cleaner removes tough stains.
To avoid damaging the screen, apply liquid to a cloth instead of directly to the touchscreen before cleaning it.

Tips.

Refer to your Garmin nuvi's maintenance and storage information found on the device's manual prevents premature wear and tear.
If the screen stopped working after prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures or water, the device's hardware is most likely damaged.
In such a case, you need to contact Garmin for additional troubleshooting and possible repairs.
Attempting to disassemble and repair the GPS yourself only increases the risk of damaging the unit even further.
also it could be a battery problem if the nuvi is not getting power ?

How to Unfreeze or Fix your Problematic Garmin Nuvi 885T GPS

Does your Garmin Nuvi 885T stop or freeze up?
Is the touchscreen unresponsive or stopped working?

As with most magic devices around us nowadays, there is a brain inside these units called 'firmware'. Over time, for whatever reason they become confused and stop operating the way they did when new.

The solution for these problems is to replace its internal instructions with new ones, called 'reflashing the firmware'.

This is an easy, automated process made simple by downloading and running some software from the Garmin website. A discontinued product, you can still find it here.

Download their software, and then run the file. You will see this screen (except it says 4.70 now):

bfefd08.jpg

Click the NEXT button and you are almost done.
Follow the prompts and soon your NUVI 885T will have all new software and should be running smoothly again.

Now that you have upgraded the software of your unit, you might consider performing a hard reset of the device. Please see my second tip for the Garmin Nuvi 885T for step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

I hope that helps.

Previosly I have done a reset to get the nuvi 666 touch screen responding again, but I don't recall the procedure can you assist>

You should not be having to constantly reset the Nuvi to make the touchscreen operational. The touchscreen is defective and needs to be replaced. I've replaced over a thousand 660 touchscreens and through my experience, a non-responsive touchscreen is caused by a defective touchscreen.

2 months old noticing touchscreen won't respond all of the time. Is there a screen sensativity adjustment? Also sometimes it locks up on power up at loading maps. Thanks, Rick Jackson

Hello,

unfortunately, there is no screen adjustment on your Gps. I would suggest you reset the unit,if that doesn't solve the problem, then you will have to update your garmin nuvi, I think its out of date and needs to be updated. Follow the procedures below on how to update your garmin nuvi:

1. Plug one end of the USB cable into your GPS and the other end into your desktop or laptop computer. The GPS device will load the appropriate driver automatically, and a message on your GPS tells you that it is connected to your computer via USB.
2. Open your Internet browser of choice and type in the following web addres: "http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27 "
3. Download the appropriate version of the software for your computer (Windows or Apple) and Install the WebUpdater by following the wizard (accept defaults).
4. Click "Start," "Programs," "Garmin" and " WebUpdater" to update your firmware and your maps. Periodically check and make sure your software is current.

Also, in case you don't know how to reset your garmin nuvi, you can follow the steps below: There are two types of reset;

Performing a Standard Reset

1. Slide the power switch all the way to the left (with the Nuvi's screen facing you).
2. Hold the switch in the position for at least eight seconds.

To perform a master reset on a nuvi 300 series device:
1.Start with the device OFF and unplugged from the power source
2.Touch and hold the top right corner of the touchscreen2
3.Power the device ON while continuing to hold the touchscreen
4.The message "Do you really want to erase all user data?" will appear
5.Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
6.Touch Yes
After the nuvi resets, follow the on-screen prompts, and then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.
Although the master reset will erase all saved favorites, any loaded custom points of interest will remain intact on the device.
If the message in step 3 does not appear when using the top right corner of the touchscreen, please repeat these steps using the bottom right corner of the touchscreen instead.
