My nintendo 64 turns on but nothing shows up on my tv. and i just bought a new av cord. when i press on the red light shows up but nothing shows up on the tv

Step 1:

So you've eliminated the possibility of bad cables. Now you need to eliminate the TV and the Nintendo 64 itself.

Step 2:

For the TV, you can try another TV or make sure that you have the TV set on the right input.

Step 3:

If you can't make it work on an additional TV and you have made absolutely sure that the TV is setup correctly, then you may be looking at a broken Nintendo 64.

Well it might be the av cable or the rf switch which one you are using might be causing the problem or it might need a new expansion pack then.

Just follow these steps and you will be playing your Nintendo 64 in no time at all.

1. Set your Nintendo 64 in it's desired location
2. Plug the power cord into the back of your console
3. Plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet
4. Plug the AV cable into the back of your Nintendo 64 system
5. On the back of your VCR find 3 cable sockets colored red white and yellow
6. Plug the the red plug of the AV cable into the red socket
7. Plug the the white plug of the AV cable into the white socket
8. Plug the the yellow plug of the AV cable into the yellow socket
9. Plug your Nintendo 64 controller into the front of your console
10. Place your game into the game cartage slot
11. Turn on the Nintendo 64

The AV cords (Yellow, White, Red plugs) for the 64 were built in a very annoying way. When you plug them in, nothing happens. To fix this, be sure to screw the AV cords in further into the hole until it won't go further. Make sure your screwing it in, and not out. make sure your TV is set to the channel of the AV cords, and turn it on. It should work, but if not, the cartridge is dusty and all you gotta do is blow on it. Do that, and make sure to push it in hard. Doesn't usually work the first time, but keep doing it over and over till it does work. Blowing is the only way to get it off. I've never tried compressed air and don't know the results. Could be dangerous. Blowing causes moisture damage to your game however the damage caused amounts to about 0.000000000000000000000000000000001. Yeah. It really wont hurt it. Either that, or don't play. That's what i tell my friends who warn me not to blow. Also, are you playing games who REQUIRE an expansion pak, for example, donkey kong 64 and majoras mask? Also, water will kill your cartridge. The inner tech of the cartridge is metal. Metal rusts. Rust damages. Water causes rust. Hope this helps.

There are a couple things this could be... check:

Is the tv set to the correct channel or "input"?

Is your game clean? (use rubbing alcohol on a q-tip to wipe the gold bars on the inside of the game)

Do you have a bad AV cord? (I think you can find new ones on ebay or potentially a vintage video games store that sells super nintendo games, they usually are willing to test it in store with a new cord).

Wow, the classic Nintendo 64. That was my first gaming system. I do know that the 64 has default RCA cords (Red, Yellow, White). They are required to be inputed into your TV. Make sure the 64 is plugged into a power source and that it turns on. Make sure that your game actually works. Clean out your 64 by using a can of compressed air, do the same to your game.

Finally try to start it up.

I had a similar problem to this. I had a 3rd party AV cord not from Nintendo, The Wii would not start up. It would not get pased the red light. Sometimes, The LED would show no color at all. so, I tried this. I unplugged the AV cord from the Wii, put the power on and pressed the button. It turned on! for the first time in months! So then I put the AV cord in and the system short circuited. I dug up the OEM cord and tried it, It works like it was out of the box! Try replacing your AV cord and power cord 

I have the same problem and from what I've read elsewhere on the net, it seems to be easily amendable by one of two solutions.

- You can re-tune a channel on your TV (not one of the main ones) and it will find the frequency for your N64 to run on

- If you had a gamecube the yellow, red and white output cables that came with that are (apparently) compatible with both the N64 and SNES and that way you wont have to tune your TV.

Unfortunately for me, I did not have a GC and my TV will not re-tune due to the button on the controller not working! Good luck.
