I have a Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 Mk III P3 1Ghz 512Mb Ram , I have installed a brand new DVD rom Drive in the MP Bay it reconises in bios also reads upon first post however, will not boot from any os cd...

Some bios menu allows you to boot from USB. (Some are locked this option by makers.)

Run safety mode and try again to see whether your DVD rom is working.

Best way will be go to device manager; go to properties of DVD rom; go to driver and click roll back driver.

If this is not working (in case), uninstall driver and reinstall it.

Hi I have cf-19 I need to install mapping software that requires a resident cd drive to install. Will any usb cd/dvd drive work?

As long as it is a plug&play drive it should work just fine. It's hard to install a USB CD/DVD Drive that isn't plug&play.

I installed windows xp pro and i have no sound cf-50 toughbook CF-50BB2NUDM I`ve tried Realtek and the panasonic sound driver download site nothing has worked so far.

Have you check Device Manager and under sound, video and game controllers to see if you have any yellow ? marks next to anything. You would go to start-control panel-system-hardware-device manager.
If you have any yellow marks missing then you will need to find the driver for those.
It may be a codec that you need too.
Also Start/ control panel/ Sounds check that MUTE is not selected and that volume is UP.
Could be these drivers that you need Audio Output: Sound card Audio Codec: STAC9751 Compliant Standards: AC '97.
Check this site and make sure you have the complete model number, There are several different ones for your Cf51 that should look like this CF-51xxxxA/H/Qxx (mk1) . Some model numbers require that you have Sevice Pack 2 or SP2 for windows installed for the sound driver to work.

    Toughbook LCD is Dark.

On all Panasonic Toughbooks, any model pre-2008/2009 would have the older LCD screen with an "inverter". The new screens are called LED because there is no inverter.
The inverter is like the "ballast" on a fluorescent tube lighting fixture. The tube could be good but if the ballast is blown then the tube will not "light-up". This is also true of the inverter.
You can also tell when the inverter is about to burn-out when you first start your toughbook in the morning and the screen is initially "red" and then turns white after the unit warms-up for a few minutes.
    Good Luck to you.
