To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:

  1. Reboot
  2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
  3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
    • mount -uw /
    • rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    • shutdown -h now
  4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!
Give me credit once it has been resolved. Thanks!

I need to unlock a iMac running OS 10.6.1

Step 1:

Turn off your iMac G5

Step 2:

Power it back on. Right when you hear the startup sound, hold down Command and S together. This will bring up a black and white terminal prompt.

Step 3:

If at this point, it asks for a password (firmware password), power back down the iMac, change the amount of RAM (remove one stick of RAM and leave the other in), turn the computer back on and when you hear the start up sound hold down Command + Option + P + R. Keep holding until it restarts again. Once it restarts again, let it boot up, then shut it down again and put the stick of RAM back in. This will reset the firmware password and should allow you to continue onto the next step.

Step 4:

Once you are successfully at the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing enter after each line.

mount -uw /
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -h now

Step 5:

That's it! Once you boot back up, you should have a brand new administrator account that you can use to access all files and remove other accounts.

  4. Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist and press Enter.
