There may be interferences from electrical appliances fridges, TV. Move the radio to some other place. For AM rotate the radio to get the best signal. For FM and SW deploy the telescopic antenna. For SW you may use an external antenna. For SW, to tune in on a station you need to know the broadcast time and the frequency.

Chances are there is nothing wrong with the mixer. IF you accidentally turned on Phantom power, that would cause the problem. Phantom is ONLY used with condenser mics and a few DI boxes. Turning it on can create noise unless balanced lines are used everywhere.

I tried to upgrade my acer aspire one A150 to a 2 GB stick of ram - didn't work so reinstalled the 512 stick I had (SHOULD be a total of 1 mb counting the 512 onboard.) It is NOW only recognizing 512. ...

Try swapping the ram sticks with each other and see if it still reports 512. If it does...then it sounds like you damaged one of the seats for the RAM somehow. Did you have any static shocks occur?
