Connect a wireless laptop to an existing wired network printer

On page 75 and page 76 of the Reference Manual
for the Panasonic Toughbook CF51 is described
the procedure to turn "on" the wireless lan:

1 Double-click on the taskbar.
2 Select your wireless LAN adapter and select [General].
3 Select [On] for [Switch radio].
4 Select [Networks] and select [Add].
5 Enter the profile name and network name (SSID), and then make
other necessary changes, then select [Next].
6 Make necessary changes and select [Finish].

Please note that there is no Physical Wireless Switch
on the Panasonic Toughbook CF51.

I suggest staying away from BIOS flashing. Last thing you want is a brick.

In Win 7 - Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing > Manage network connections. Enable the wireless card.

In XP - Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Enable the wireless card.

if you don't have a card, you can always buy a pcmcia card if it has the appopriate slot. if not you can buy a usb adapter for it. make sure that you have the physical on/off switch set to on

A Local Area Connection, or LAN, is generally a small home or office network used to link all the devices in the area. With the advent of wireless technologies, LAN networks are no longer limited to the amount of cords you own. Laptops can connect to wireless LAN easily with their built in wireless adapters. Connecting two laptops together over wireless LAN is also easy, but requires a few special steps to give the laptops access to each other.

1Connect both laptops to the wireless network you wish to use. Once connected, click the "Start" button and navigate to the "Network" menu.

2.Click the "Network and Sharing Center" link. Press the "View Computers and Devices" button. A list of devices currently on the network is displayed.

3.Check the list for the names of both laptops. If both laptops are displayed in the list of devices connected to the network, the devices are connected wirelessly to a LAN network.

the canon MP170 is not a wifi printer, you need to connect it to a computer via usb, if you have have a second computer on your network you may "share" the printer across the network.this will allow you to print wirelessly to the printer via the connected PC.

Check if the printer has a wireless option. Actually this issue is complex. First thing first, you can print wirelessly from your laptop within the WIFI range in a case that your printer do have wireless on in. It is impossible to print wirelessly from the wired printer through LAN.

One thing, I guess you don't have a wireless router. You need to have a wireless router like LINKSYS that is easy to setup then try to connect wirelessly to the wired printer. There I am not too sure if your can do a printing option from your laptop wirelessly.

Lastly, check if you have a ROUTER and need to set it up on your laptop and on the network LAN. You may now have a NETWORK printer in this regards. Thank you.

If the wireless card is an old model it possibly won't support WAP encryption. The wireless router most likely supports both WEP and WAP encryption.
WEP is not as secure as WAP so use the highest bit encryption that is available to you.

You seem rather savvy so I won't bore you with frivolous explanation. Essentially ISPs detect the MAC address of whatever device is plugged into their network. In the case of your laptop connected wired to your modem, the MAC address of your wired adapter is what is tied to your ISP account. When you plugged in a router, the MAC address of that router was different than your laptop's wired network adapter and your ISP said "nope, not letting that connect". This is something most ISPs are doing now-a-days.

You can get around this by following these steps:

1. Plug your PC back into the modem wired
2. Ensure you have internet connection again
3. Go to Start -> run and type "cmd" without quotes
4. Type "ipconfig /release" without the quotes (there is a space in there that needs to be in there)
5. Disconnect your PC from the modem and plug the router into it
6. Plug another LAN cable into the router and your laptop
7. In the same command prompt, type "ipconfig /renew"

If the computer pulls an IP address for the wired ethernet, you should be all set to disconnect the cable from the router and PC and try to connect to it wireless. If it doesn't pull an IP address, you'll need to contact your ISP and inform them that you're having trouble getting your new router to work with your existing network.

You might also consider depressing the reset button located on the back of your Linksys router to set the router to its default configuration. This would clear all previous settings if there were any and might clear up any configuration options you had set when previously using this router.

Well this is a picture of what a Wireless Button should resemble:


If it's red it is off, if it's blue it's on..
But I can see from the picture below that the Toughbook cf-51 doesn't appear to have one in the 'normal' place:



So, maybe you can go to Control Panel and click the Intel Pro Wireless icon and run a diagnostic to tell you some more information. Since you mentioned that you have checked the device manager, I guess you'll have done this too.
So, all I can recommend is to double click on the networks connection on the bottom right hand corner of your screen and open Network and Sharing Manager, and make sure Network Discovery is enabled, then Manage Wireless Networks, and right click on your connection and click Properties, and check the 'Automatically Connect When in Range' box.
If it doesn't connect now, click on the network and press Connect now.
