Hi again. Its me, guest. I was having exactly the same problem as you. I used win me system restore to reset the system and clear any epson fragments from the registry. Then I put the epson cd in the cd drive and made sure the printer was switched off and disconnected. As the software loads the printer driver, it asks you to switch the printer on. Do it. Once the printer driver was loaded, I switched the printer off again. The install software then proceeded to load all the other options, including Epson Smart Panel. Installs which involve usb devices seem to be very sensitive. It worked for me. Good luck.
Use add/remove programs to uninstall all epson related software, especially any reference to USB. The system restore still looks like the best option.
Try a system restore to a date before your problem started.
