Dell E173FP stuck in power save mode

When I turn the monitor on I get a message "In power save mode press any key on keyboard or move mouse" I press keys and move the mouse but nothing happens.  I turned the monitor removed the cables checked the pins and they were fine.  I turn the monitor back on but did not reconnect the cable and I get the floating test screen.  When I plug the cable back in I again get the same error message

Exactly the same problem with Dell Monotor stuck in Power Save Mode, but can't get into the PC to Appearance and Themes to fix the problem as suggested above because of the problem with the monitor. Catch 22?

Have exactly the same problem with my recently purchased 2004 dell LCD monitor. Worked fine at the shop but not at home. Plugged it into a friends PC (who has a $200+ graphics card installed to run games) and it worked fine. But in my PC it is stuck in power save mode. Is there a patch that can be run on my PC to fix this?

My computer is completely stuck in Power saving mode. It won't even go off. I unplug it for some time and come back the next day, plug it in and I can still hear it running. Even the CD drive will open and seemingly commence, then nothing happens. The monitor reads, warning...your computer is going to power saving mode. I can't get any screen up or nothing. Tried pressing F8 a few times and it would seem like it will boot, then stop. Nothing.

    lcd monitor in power save

  • dtl78 Oct 19, 2008

I have the same issue... but I doubt it is a monitor issue... or a monitor cable issue... or a graphics card issue. I have two PCs; the PC with the problem is a running Win XP-Pro ( and was running fine for 2 years or more). The other PC (the one I am on now) runs Win2000Pro. The XP box suddenly contracted this "In Power Save Mode" screen, so I did some surfing to figure it out and have done the following things... (1) swapped graphics cards with a known good unit... (2) switched out monitors... (3) switched out monitor video cables... (4) swapped out the PC power supply for a new (and beefier) one... (5) replaced the CMOS battery (as suggested on a different site)... (6) connected different (known to be functional) keyboard and mouse. All failed to clear up this "In Power Save" mode" screen. Though this was not my original configuration, I am currently connected to both PCs via an A-B switch, so I can control both PCs from one keyboard-mouse-monitor and continue testing different ideas. When I switch over to "B", this monitor will go blank and give me the "In Power Save mode" message. I switch back to "A" (and the Win2000 box) and here I am typing away... so the problem is definitely not the monitor or the cables. I have also switched the leads on the A-B switch I am currently using to ensure that this is not an issue. I am open to any "fresh" ideas anyone may have... please help!!

I have the same (similar) problem. I have a Dell D620 with a Dell 2nd monitor, everything hass been working fine for 2yrs now, until the other day. I went away from my machine, came back 1hr later and all of my apperance settinsg had reset (background, annoying indows sounds, theme, etc) then I noticed my 2nd monitor was blank too.
Pressing the control buttons on the front (colour, contract, etc) brings up a message

"Monitor in Power Save mode, activate via PC".

I tried pressing the Fn+F8 and going to Desktop - Settings - Extend dual screen thing

Eventually I just pressed the power button on the front of the monitor. Big mistake! Now the monitor seems completely DEAD!
Even though Windows (XPsp3) knows the monitor is there (it appears in my dual screen settings) I can not so much as get a flashing green standby LCD.
I have tried my laptop on 3 other monitors and they are all the same!

Just had the same problem... what worked for me was simple. Unplug the cable from the monitor, hit the power button a few times until Dell screen poped up with a few color bars because it knew it was no longer connected to a PC. Then plugged the cable back in and all was fixed.

  • Mercurious Nov 15, 2010

Before you go out and overhaul your computer with new power supply, cables, memory sticks and a cocktail umbrella, try this simple fix above. I was ready to throw my Dell SZX2210 monitor out the window; spent an hour trying to get the Power Save mode in sync with my computer so I could turn the damn thing off. It seems to happen when I unplug my main computer to use my Lenovo tablet PC for scanning. Anyway, this fix about actually is a FIX. It worked exactly as advertised the first time. Now I have a fix whenever it reoccurs. What a shame it takes individuals figuring things out and having to share online because Dell engineers can't seem to work out the issue in the first place. JLTJJ, hats off to you...YOU'RE TOPS!

This just happened to a friend of mine.Monitor in power save mode,no response from keyboard or mouse. After much frustration broke down and called Dell technical support. It turned out to be a bad memory stick. After turning off the computer we removed one of the memory sticks and booted up again. It worked,no longer in power save mode. Then we did the same thing with the other memory stick.Back in power save mode! Computer is much slower with just one 512 but as soon as we add another memory card it will be back to normal.Hopefully this helps someone

I know how to fix this. In Control Panel - Appearance and Themes - Display, pick "Settings".. make sure that in the "Display" pull-down, you select "1. (Multiple Monitors)".

It should work fine :)

I had the same problem and found two ways to correct it.
1. You can try hitting the minus (-) button on the monitor. You should get the colorful input test. If it says 2. Digital, then hit it again until the analog comes up. Apparently the analog can get changed to digital which disables or puts to sleep the analog feed (your PC). If this doesn't do it...
2. You will need a laptop. Plug the video cable into your laptop. If the screen does not come up, then close the lid on your laptop. It should come up then. At this point you need to go into the menu on the monitor and reset "all" back to factory. You can then put it back on your pc and it should come up just fine.

I turn my computer on
The screen power button turns green for a second then to orange.. then the message "in power save mode, move the mouse or any key on the keyboard blah blah"..
So i move my mouse and press my keys.. nothing.
I remove the cables (any) cos im so frustrated, switch the switches and unplug the plugs over and over again..
sometimes 40 minutes later it finally turns on.

I have to do this ..every.. single.. time..
and its really annoying, i know nothing about computers and so please help anyone.

I have the same problem, mine got worse with time, initially I could reboot and the monitor would come back on but then it eventurally stayed in power saving mode. My old monitor works fine when I reinstalled it. My old monitor relied on windows to turn off the screen. I think the new monitor has a power saving mode in it that conflicts with windows. I am running Windows 7. There are a lot of posts about this on the internet but I have not seen a solution yet, except to return the monitor.

If you have added a memory stick make sure it is seated in the slot correctly. If not check the sticks already installed to make sure they are seated completely and clipped into place. Always unplug your tower before checking your memory sticks.

We just had the same problem, and the solution was to unplug both the monitor and computer from wall outlet(120vac power). Wait at least 30 seconds, then plug both in again, then turn them on. Be patient, you'll still get the power saving mode message, but it will boot up anyway. Hope this helps.

Oft monitor repairs differs in many kind of problems a suggestion for handlings is is realy hard to find if something worked correct before and all handlings are present before and worked when this happens and from the one to other time the unit no longer functions, noticed that I had found a small 15 " Dell monitor by the trash a 7 years ago and succesfully have repaired where the first error discovered which started primary in power part of the one print board integrated Dell and I pretty much exactly had the same elements problems like and shows as the lower link.
Albeit it was a different model still like to see the link which shows a similar problem, here are connoisseurs behind the hidden defects in Dell monitors with a lot of knowledge.!! Replace in the first place to be shure the is a a flat dc always the great capacitor to begin and take a little oversized capacitor parts if it can fit and use a 200 watt lamp in serial on the power supply to search for faults in case to test if several damaged parts are replaced to test it first.
The first error discovered which started primary and I pretty much exactly had the same elements ironer shows as lower link.

For me it is a graphics card issue, I have reverted to onboard graphics and all is fine now, I had unplugged the computer and moved it so a pin must have come out of place as my graphics card is no longer recognised, I switched to VGA socket and all is fine with onboard, altough not as fast a lot less noisy and I have to hit F1 to say I am aware I am not using my graphics card (I'm not a technie so don't know/want to mess with the card until I can pay someone, so yeah anyway that fixed it.

Cured the problem with dell 1713FP 17" LCD monitor by accessing safe mode on pc then apgrading graphics card via the web

I seem to get problem with my Dell monitor after opening my computer--which involves unplugging and re-plugging the USB inputs for my wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I gather that I can't wake the monitor because the keyboard and mouse aren't yet awake which leads to a Catch-22.

The general solution has been to plug the monitor into my laptop (in my case I need to also switch my monitor from DVI-D to VGA input), then shift the laptop into multiple monitor mode (Control Panel... Display... Settings... Click the picture of monitor 2... Check "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor"). This may bring the monitor to life... or may not, depending on how "confused" it is. Extra hocus-pocus may be required...

For instance, it may help to power down the monitor, unplug all inputs, then power back up. The monitor hovers in a moment of hesitation -- it really wants to "power save" -- then jumps to the panicked conclusion that there's ZERO input and gives a new floating screen with color bars. After that, when plug my laptop in, the monitor listens. Then I switch over to DVI-D input and... there's my long lost desktop.

Who knows, the hocus-pocus on its own might sometimes do the trick...

Cruising other forums I see hints that this trouble may be linked to an underpowered video card, with suggestions to invest in a beefier power supply. In my case, this is likely sound advice.

Good luck all!

That's funny, I just had this problem yesterday. I hope you haven't totally trashed the monitor yet, because the problem is probably with the cable that connects your monitor to you computer. At least that was the case for me, and a simple replacement ($10 at office depot) did it for me.  Hope that helps!

Shut down your computer, unplug your screen, and the power cable of your pc. Then keep pressing the power button in order to empty the condensators. (you will see the leds going on, and then nothing).

Then replug all your cable, and boot your pc.

Dropped keyboard. Now display on monitor says 1. Analog input in power save mode - press any key or move mouse to turn on. I have done both, neither works. I have turned off system and I see it rebooting...

Hello,

the message Analog input in power save mode means that your monitor is not getting a signal from your computer.

Maybe you moved the video cable while reconnecting your keyboard? check both ends of your video cable.

If you have a DVI cable, then your monitor has to be switched to digial input.

I hope this helps.

When I turn the monitor on I get a message "In

Most Dell LCDs have multiple inputs and they will go into "standby" while waiting for a signal from your PC. This happens when your PC goes into "sleep" mode or if you are sure your PC is not in "sleep" mode then usually the LCD is not in the correct input selection. Check the input selection for the appropriate input. As always, make sure the cables are securely connected. Hope this helps.

My monitor shuts down after one second.

Dell monitors automatically go into power-save mode after a preset amount of time when the computer is inactive. The Dell monitor will go completely black, instead of showing a screensaver. This doesn't mean that your Dell computermag-glass_10x10.gif has shut down. Instead, this allows your monitor to essentially turn off until it's needed again. You can change how long it is before the Dell monitor goes into power-save mode by changing your display settings.
  1. Step 1 Press any key on your keyboard or move your mouse. Either will turn off power-save mode. Alternately, you can press the power button on your Dell computer tower or laptop.
  2. Step 2 Press any key a second time if the monitor goes from power-save to stand-by mode. Stand-by mode allows the screensaver to appear.
  3. Step 3 Enter your user name and password into the login prompt if your computer requires a login. Press "Enter" to begin using your Dell computer.
  4. Step 4 Change the display settings on your Dell monitor to prevent your monitor from going into power-save mode prematurely. Right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose "Properties." Click the "Screensaver" tab and press "Power." Beside "Turn off Monitor," choose a time amount from the drop-down list and press "Apply."

In power save mode

The monitor is not receiving signal from the computer. Is the power light on on the computer? If so - press and hold power button on computer until the power light goes off, then press again to restart. If the computer starts and you still have no picture it is most likely a video card or motherboard problem.
