Just had the same problem... what worked for me was simple. Unplug the cable from the monitor, hit the power button a few times until Dell screen poped up with a few color bars because it knew it was no longer connected to a PC. Then plugged the cable back in and all was fixed.
Before you go out and overhaul your computer with new power supply, cables, memory sticks and a cocktail umbrella, try this simple fix above. I was ready to throw my Dell SZX2210 monitor out the window; spent an hour trying to get the Power Save mode in sync with my computer so I could turn the damn thing off. It seems to happen when I unplug my main computer to use my Lenovo tablet PC for scanning. Anyway, this fix about actually is a FIX. It worked exactly as advertised the first time. Now I have a fix whenever it reoccurs. What a shame it takes individuals figuring things out and having to share online because Dell engineers can't seem to work out the issue in the first place. What if both the monitor and computer are stuck in power saver? There is no way to get to the control panel. Then what?

This just happened to a friend of mine.Monitor in power save mode,no response from keyboard or mouse.After much frustration broke down and called Dell technical support.It turned out to be a bad memory stick.After turning off the computer we removed one of the memory sticks and booted up again.It worked,no longer in power save mode.Then we did the same thing with the other memory stick.Back in power save mode! Computer is much slower with just one 512 but as soon as we add another memory card it will be back to normal.Hopefully this helps someone
I know how to fix this. In Control Panel - Appearance and Themes - Display, pick "Settings".. make sure that in the "Display" pull-down, you select "1. (Multiple Monitors)".

I had the same problem and found two ways to correct it.
1. You can try hitting the minus (-) button on the monitor. You should get the colorful input test. If it says 2. Digital, then hit it again until the analog comes up. Apparently the analog can get changed to digital which disables or puts to sleep the analog feed (your PC). If this doesn't do it...
2. You will need a laptop. Plug the video cable into your laptop. If the screen does not come up, then close the lid on your laptop. It should come up then. At this point you need to go into the menu on the monitor and reset "all" back to factory. You can then put it back on your pc and it should come up just fine.

The screen power button turns green for a second then to orange.. then the message "in power save mode, move the mouse or any key on the keyboard blah blah"..
So i move my mouse and press my keys.. nothing.
I remove the cables (any) cos im so frustrated, switch the switches and unplug the plugs over and over again..
sometimes 40 minutes later it finally turns on.
I have to do this ..every.. single.. time..
and its really annoying, i know nothing about computers and so please help anyone.

Well i have fix lots of these most of the time it requires no parts but it is solder joint that need to be resoldered dur to cracked solder joints these were all factory solder by a mechine and have poor solder joint to begin with i have repaired 100s of these issues just by resolder all the joints look close at the bottem of the board and i bet my next pay check you would find bad solder is all the problem you have
I tried sol #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5. When I got to #5 Viola! That did it. Thanks replace the bad cable.
I have had this problem since purchasing the Dell monitor a month ago. I made sure that on the monitor itself the setting was selected at Auto & it is working now. We shall see
I have the same problem, mine got worse with time, initially I could reboot and the monitor would come back on but then it eventurally stayed in power saving mode. My old monitor works fine when I reinstalled it. My old monitor relied on windows to turn off the screen. I think the new monitor has a power saving mode in it that conflicts with windows. I am running Windows 7. There are a lot of posts about this on the internet but I have not seen a solution yet, except to return the monitor.
I did a system restore on my pc from last month when I knew the monitor (Dell 1707fp) and Tv were working.
I'm now back in business.
Did you update your Video card drivers recently?.....i'm finding thet the newest nvidia drivers (For 9 series cards) are giving this issue.
Simplest fix...(if this is the case) reinstall an earlier driver...
If you have added a memory stick make sure it is seated in the slot correctly. If not check the sticks already installed to make sure they are seated completely and clipped into place. Always unplug your tower before checking your memory sticks.
We just had the same problem, and the solution was to unplug both the monitor and computer from wall outlet(120vac power). Wait at least 30 seconds, then plug both in again, then turn them on. Be patient, you'll still get the power saving mode message, but it will boot up anyway. Hope this helps.

For me it is a graphics card issue, I have reverted to onboard graphics and all is fine now, I had unplugged the computer and moved it so a pin must have come out of place as my graphics card is no longer recognised, I switched to VGA socket and all is fine with onboard, altough not as fast a lot less noisy and I have to hit F1 to say I am aware I am not using my graphics card (I'm not a technie so don't know/want to mess with the card until I can pay someone, so yeah anyway that fixed it.

I seem to get problem with my Dell monitor after opening my computer--which involves unplugging and re-plugging the USB inputs for my wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I gather that I can't wake the monitor because the keyboard and mouse aren't yet awake which leads to a Catch-22.
The general solution has been to plug the monitor into my laptop (in my case I need to also switch my monitor from DVI-D to VGA input), then shift the laptop into multiple monitor mode (Control Panel... Display... Settings... Click the picture of monitor 2... Check "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor"). This may bring the monitor to life... or may not, depending on how "confused" it is. Extra hocus-pocus may be required...
For instance, it may help to power down the monitor, unplug all inputs, then power back up. The monitor hovers in a moment of hesitation -- it really wants to "power save" -- then jumps to the panicked conclusion that there's ZERO input and gives a new floating screen with color bars. After that, when plug my laptop in, the monitor listens. Then I switch over to DVI-D input and... there's my long lost desktop.
Who knows, the hocus-pocus on its own might sometimes do the trick...
Cruising other forums I see hints that this trouble may be linked to an underpowered video card, with suggestions to invest in a beefier power supply. In my case, this is likely sound advice.

That's funny, I just had this problem yesterday. I hope you haven't totally trashed the monitor yet, because the problem is probably with the cable that connects your monitor to you computer. At least that was the case for me, and a simple replacement ($10 at office depot) did it for me. Hope that helps!

Have exactly the same problem with my recently purchased 2004 dell LCD monitor. Worked fine at the shop but not at home. I've same problem on various Dell Monitor. A solutio is to unplug the cable, plug it on a second monitor working then replug it on first monitro. Lot of times it works but it's a bit boring...

I have the same issue... but I doubt it is a monitor issue... or a monitor cable issue... or a graphics card issue. I have two PCs; the PC with the problem is a running Win XP-Pro ( and was running fine for 2 years or more). The other PC (the one I am on now) runs Win2000Pro. The XP box suddenly contracted this "In Power Save Mode" screen, so I did some surfing to figure it out and have done the following things... (1) swapped graphics cards with a known good unit... (2) switched out monitors... (3) switched out monitor video cables... (4) swapped out the PC power supply for a new (and beefier) one... (5) replaced the CMOS battery (as suggested on a different site)... (6) connected different (known to be functional) keyboard and mouse. All failed to clear up this "In Power Save" mode" screen. Though this was not my original configuration, I am currently connected to both PCs via an A-B switch, so I can control both PCs from one keyboard-mouse-monitor and continue testing different ideas. When I switch over to "B", this monitor will go blank and give me the "In Power Save mode" message. I switch back to "A" (and the Win2000 box) and here I am typing away... so the problem is definitely not the monitor or the cables. I have also switched the leads on the A-B switch I am currently using to ensure that this is not an issue. I am open to any "fresh" ideas anyone may have... please help!!

I tried pressing the Fn+F8 and going to Desktop - Settings - Extend dual screen thing

monitor seems to be receiving the data from computer
i play with the button in front but i can only receive data for no more than a couple of second,and then it's gone.
