When I turn on the camera the shutter ,len cover,is open but lcd screen is black , but all the camera info still appears on the screen. I tried shooting a few photos and those turn out black as well. Please help!
With the power off, hold the camera in your palm and smack the front of the camera on your leg or arm. You might have to smack it a few time to get it to work. It has to do with the camera CDD lense (shuttle) being stuck. By smacking it around, it will free up the lense. Being extra gentle with it though. It worked for me. Hope this help.

I tried using this method but for some reason it is now not working. i kept on hitting it on the palm of my hand and now the shutter won't open!!!! tell me what i should do now

When camera is powered up, the shutter opens but the LCd remains black as if it were off

this camera isnt very old and ive never hurt it in anyway so i was confused when all of a sudden it was turning on and everything was black. you can take a picture still, and still upload the black pictures that it takes. as well as you can go to the menu an d all of that stuff. it just looks like youre in a black room i guess. im going on vacation next week and need my camera! help!
yea the screen of my camera is black am able to take pictures but they come out black and can't see anything, and also am able to go through the menu but the only problem is the black screen........help please......am going on vacation in couple of days....
When I turn on the camera, the "Coolpix" logo pops up (lcd is working) and the shutter opens. Then the screen goes to black, although camera icons for battery power, etc. are visible. It seems that the camera will take pics but they are all black too.

Had the same old problem, camera powers up ,you can view startup settings etc on tv screen but you carn't view anything you want to take a picture of. just a dark screen. i was ready to throw camera in bin. UNTIL i tried the solution posted by (skydog)
AND Yes ! it worked after several attempts of holding camera in palm of hand then wacked it into palm of other hand directly under lense and flash unit. can now see image of photos i need to take.
the camara is working but the screen is black and the photoes are too.
i have the same problem but the only difference is that my lens seem to be lodged toward the top of the camera. I can even see a white line at the bottom of the lens. i tried all the suggestions but nothing worked. please help! I cannot afford to get a new one
