as far as the transmit frequency changing while you have the mic keyed this is normal, the transmit frequency is a little different than the receive, as far as the lost channels go you need to check the galaxy website and check to see if thier is any fixes listed. if none is listed then you can send the tech's a e-mail and tell them your problem and they will advise you on what to do.

Check the soldering connections of X-1 and X-2 (crystals) on the trace side of the board . Common problem with this radio.... I'm thinking a cold/loose solder joint.

Look on the bottom of th board near the audio chip you will see a resistor or a resistor and Capacitor combination just laying on the board tack soldered to it. Heat and lift one end turn the radio back on and see if the talk back is gone. If so install your switch there.

Normal 1-40 uses AM.. there are many modulation forms. AM FM SSB CW and many other digital modes. its the same frequency just different way of voice modulation styles.
