Cd player will eject cd but wont turn on..

My mate was wiring neon lights into my car, for sum reason he solvered some of my wires and he blew up my cd player as sson as i plugged it in it would smoke and go really hot, so ive just brought a new cd player and put the wires onto it but this one will eject the cd's but wont actually turn on..why?? i have exactly the same problem with my vw golf my cd ejects but cd player does not turn on any advice for us people??? please bored without ma music : D
