Sounds like new belt is jammed or something is out of place. Turn by hand and find out where the problem is. You can tell where the belt is stuck or jammed. Pull the key before you mess with stuff underneath the unit. I installed my belt the wrong way on my unit and ruined a new belt and it would not shift.. The shifter rod could have been dislocated when you installed the belt also.

You have the old style reverser which has been replaced by one that beeps instead of kicking out.These are a known problem with Deere and that is why you can't buy them anymore.The fact that you can hold it in yourself indicates that the enable solenoid and the forward and reverse solenoid are ok and all safety switches are working.You need to replace the reversrer.
