Looks like the lower ceal on the gearbox. No fun. Have to pull rhe pitman arm off,then a snap ring holds the seal, seems like there's 2 seals and a spacer and a washer .Problem is that is'd hard to get the seals out. Try this,after the snap ring is out,fire the motor and turn the steering wheel,will usually just blow the seal out. Make a huge mess tho !!! Otherwise the only way I've found is a small drill then a small slidehammer.
remove the timing belt and crankshaft gear.drill a small shallow hole into the steel ring of the seal.USE CAUTION DONT DAMAGE AREA AROUND AND BEHIND SEAL..you need to insert a self tapping screw into small hole you drill using pliers pull the front crankshaft seal out.when installing new seal coat new seal with grease and you need SEAL INSTALLER TOOL J35268-A.
yes you will find these parts fit a lot of other cars some with oil seals some without an oil seal fits 50%in a grove and 50% out so if you seen no oil seal when replacing then dont worry about it.adrian,,,,,,
It's actually pretty easy to get it back on when you know the trick.
Since it has leaked on you, you may want to remove the seal off of the rim closest to the door and clean the rim and the sealing surface. The seal has a molded lip that fits on to a raised formed rim, and it gets pressed on snugly before the ring and spring are added. You can seat the seal by pressing on it all the way around with the palms of your hands.
To install the ring:
Start the ring 180 degrees from the spring, placing it in the groove behind the seal face. (You want to make sure that the seal is pressed back into place first). Work the ring on around the seal, until you get to mostly just the spring remaining. Now lever the spring over the lip and into the groove, using a small screwdriver, being careful not to damage the seal with the screwdriver.
Feel around the seal, in the groove behind the seal face. You'll find a spring at the bottom. With a small screwdriver, lever the spring over the seal face. Work the steel ring off. Fold the seal inside the washer. Unplug the washer, Remove the door, and set aside. Locate your panel screws and remove the front, exposing the drum and basket. There are usually additional screws under the dispenser trays too. Disconnect the door lock wires. Locate the other spring/ring assembly on the outer drum, and remove. Orient your new seal properly and reassemble. The only difference on the reassembly is that, when you are putting the rings back on, start 180 degrees from the spring, and work the ring back on until you get to the spring. Carefully lever the spring back over the seal face, being careful not to damage your new seal.

Make sure that you did not pinch an O ring seal when you were installing the cartridge. If so replace O ring. when installing new cartridge try putting a little Vaseline on all the O rings. It will seal better. It is rare but you could have purchased a defective cartridge. Never buy a cartridge if the package was opened because maybe someone just needed the O ring that is making your faucet leak :-)
Per previous post. A quart in 750 miles would be extremely high. A Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera driven hard doesn't use this much unless it's motor is toast, and it is practically a race car. You should expect at most a quart of oil consumption for 3000 miles. A quart of oil in 750 miles is a quart EVERY OTHER tank of fuel, and would indicate a motor that needed a rebuild long ago (or seals, guides or rings). BTW, If you can see smoke in the read view, it looks much worse when someone is driing behind you. STP or changing to the next higher weight of oil are short term solutions that may help you not leave a trail of smoke.
If you need valve seals, maybe that's it, but if you need guides, the rings are probably near shot too, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Hi to replace the seal take off the metal ring with a small screwdriver at the spring on the front of the machine than take off the seal then take the top off the machine and locate the screw on the metal ring undo a bit then take off seal replace and put back the new seal in reverse order as I have written
