New thermocouple on GE/rheem water heater pilot still won't lite

does the pilot go out when you let off the button? Or does the pilot not light at all?

If you dont get any gas at all to the pilot the the gas valve is bad.
Of you get a pilot light that goes out when you let go of the button then the therno couple is not reading the flame (needs adjustment so the pilot flame touches it)
did you kink the new thermocouple? or over tighten it at the gas valve.
if it was kinked its now toast, cant straighten them. If kinked and starightened the fluid inside has broken the inner seal and wont work.

I have a 40 Gallon GE Smartshield Hot water tank. The pilot will light and hold but once I turn the gas valve from pilot to on the burner ignites and then burns out taking the pilot with it. I've played...

I had a situation like this and it turned out to simply be the build up of residue where the flame comes out. I cleaned it with spray air, like you use for electronics. Once cleaned it re-lit to the proper size to maintain slight contact with the burner. Hope this helps! It wont hurt to try before calling for service anyway!

I have a GE smart water heater model GG40T6A. the pilot light will not stay lit. what can i do?

The pilot light jet may have got a little bit of dirt or grit in it which is preventing it from keeping alight. Try probing the jet with a fine piece of wire to see it the blockage can be dislodged. You may have to unscrew the jet to clear it by blowing air through it. Make sure gas is turned off first before removing any parts.

The pilot light also has a thermocouple that allows gas to the pilot light while the flame is burning. If flame goes out it shuts gas off to the pilot jet. The thermocouple is bypassed by a switch during the initial ignition and once the thermocouple warms up after a minute or two of holding in the bypass switch, it should maintain the pilot. If, after cleaning, the pilot light keeps going out, it would seem that your thermocouple is faulty and needs to be replaced

I have a 40 galon GE Smart shield water heater, Model: SH40T12AVH00, Serial # GELN0805V13908. The pilot light is lit but the burner will not stay on for more than 2 secods and then shuts-off.

I believe this unit does not have a standing pilot light and lights each time? Have you reinstalled all doors back into the heater? It sounds like the main burner is blowing the pilot off the thermocouple. You might try replacing the thermocouple. M# 640HORT4 s# H07A090378---MY Pilot Light wont

Hi,
First thing is to replace the thermoscouple. When you light it you get it a bit hotter then normal. You turn on the main burner which keeps it hot. Then when it goes back to just pilot the flame is not hot enough to hold the pilot valve in.
Replace the thermocouple and you will be fine...

Natural gas hot water heater not stying lit

Probably a bad solenoid in the gas valve. Higher voltage of a new thermocouple keeps it open longer but it still fails over a period of time. Look into a new gas valve for the water heater.
