Canon Canoscan LiDE 25 shows "USB device not recognized" on Vista Home Premium 32-bit

My Canon Canoscan LoDE 25 scanner shows "USB device not recognized" on Vista Home Premium 32-bit. This scanner has been used used sparingly since purchase in 2008. Last used 3 days back after a gap of a few months when it scanned a few pages and then stopped working. No change in status after plugging in to other USB ports on my laptop, or changing USB cable, or uninstalling drivers, cleaning my system, and reinstalling drivers from the Canon CD, or Canon US site, or Canon UK site. Even tried VueScan but this also does not recognize the scanner. I find it hard to believe that a "Canon" product stops working in barely 5-6 years even though it is very sparingly used and stored in the original packing when not in use. Is there a solution out there?

Typo in line 1 in my post above - please read LiDE instead of LoDE

Point # 1 : Electronic devices are not made to be used sparingly or stored for long periods of time.

Point # 2 : 5-6 years is not 'barely' in-terms of an electronic device's lifetime (Given that the warranty for your device is about 1 year !).

Point # 3 : You obviously tried almost everything on the computer site of this issue, Its time to take your device to a service center.

I did speak to the Canon repair center who informed me that since this model (Canoscan LiDE 25) is no more in production, spares for this model will also cost about as much as the price of a new model (Canoscan LiDE 110). I have decided to buy the new model. Posting the problem on this thread since I find plenty of users in the dark about actions to be taken when they get "USB device not recognized" with Canon scanners. Despite the warranty being only 1 year, electronic devices are supposed to last a lot longer than 5-6 years, particularly if they are protected from moisture, heat and dust. The reason for discarding any model must be redundancy due to upgrades, and not due to component failures, particularly products from behemoths like Canon.

This is a common problem with a number of devices that are not compatible with newer Windows Operating Systems (post Windows XP). I have found this problem with upgrading to Windows 7. I had a terrific 32 bit Visioneer scanner that was incompatible with Windows 7 which requires 64 bit compatibility. There are no fixes for it, unless the manufacturer (like Canon) creates a software upgrade for the device to be compatible. Ultimately, I had to sell my scanner and will be purchasing a new one that IS compatible with Windows 7.

One current alternative for pre-Windows 7 OS is Virtual Machine software that creates a secondary/virtual computer within your computer that runs under Windows XP, so all your 32 bit devices and sofware will work on your 64 operating system. Look for VM Lite and download it free. I've had success with some of my Windows XP software programs that didn't work on the Windows 7 OS. Unfortunately, as of this writing, VM Lite still does not support USB devices yet... so this won't solve your Scanner problem. You can hold on to it and hope the will create the USB fix or sell it. Either way, you'll want to buy a new scanner for immediate use. Wish I had better news!

SOURCE: Canon ScanGear CS driver error Code: 2,252,0 - Can't preview

Hi,

Canon ScanGear CS driver error Code: 2,252,0. Error when trying to Preview scan using ScanGear in your program, e.g. Word, PhotoShop...

I had the same problem, Canon Technical were clueless on this error code. Yes the problem occured when trying to preview first however I could scan but without any preview, pointless really.

I have fixed it for Windows Xp SP3, Canon Lide 80. To Fix:

You need to download the latest ScanGear driver and Deldrv.exe from the canon website. You don't need the Toolbox, http://software.canon-europe.com/

It would help if you have Tuneup 2009 (even Trail version) for the later parts of this fix: http://www.tune-up.com/download/ just click download, you don't need to give them your email address.

1. Save these on C:
2. Remove the USB cable from your scanner - make sure it is unplugged.
3. Run Deldrv.exe, select your scanner and uninstall.

4. Now you will need to go into 'C:/WINDOWS/TWAIN_32' folder; you must remove anything in this folder - safest thing to do is CUT any items and paste them on the C: or personal folder.

5. Now the register parts - you need to purge your registry of any left over values. I found out after several attempts that this final step fixed the problem for me.

Basically through Windows XP Regedit or TuneUp Reg Editor search the ENTIRE registry for first 'ScanGear', second, 'Canon' and third if you have installed previously, 'Canon Toolbox'. Find any entries relating to any Canon scanner software and delete them. I only found around 6 or 7 entries to remove.

6. If you have TuneUp run '1-Click maintence' (correct problems) and afterwards run the 'Register defragger'. Restart.

7. On the next bootup your register should be optimised. Ok, disable any Anti-virus software.

8. Run the scangear setup winzip file you saved on C:. * it will extract a folder to C:. If get an error with the extraction, try running it anywhere else except C drive. Alternatively if you have WinRar, right click and manual extract contents. The scangear setup winzip file/folder (called lide80vst7250a_xpen) only contained a readme and setupSG.exe.

9. You must run the setupSG inside this folder. And you're done. Enable your anti-virus.

9. Now connect USB to scanner, Windows should pick it up. Open Word or PhotoShop > run the scangear program to preview.

10. Done! It worked my end.

Please let me know if this helped you.

What is Canon LiDE 110 internal error, code: 5,202,52?

Ken G resurrected this old post from July 2014, but in looking for the answer, I found this.

Please make sure that the USB cable that you are using is 6 feet long or shorter. Also, please make sure that the USB cable is connected directly from the CanoScan LiDE 110 to your computer and is not connected to a USB hub or some other device.

Canoscan toolbox has stopped working

Vista is the laughing stock of IT pros everywhere.  Vista is truly the bastard child of Bill Gates.  Go on Canon web site and look for updated drivers to run on Vista or downgrade back to XP, which is more user friendly with peripherals.

Canoscan does not work on vista 64-bit

I'm not sure if this will work on the lide 20. I have an lide 35, and there are no 64 bit drivers for it. I downloaded and installed the drivers for the lide 60, told the computer to manually find the lide 60 drivers for my scanner, and installed the canoscan toolbox for vista 64 bit. Works like a champ.

Canon Scanner - Twain Pilot

QUICK ANSWER: use the original USB cable that came with the scanner.

LONG EXPLANATION:
Using Vista (32 bit version) and a Canon N670U scanner with the new drivers installed from the CanonUSA website. This driver is works for Canon scanners: LiDE 20, LiDE 30, N670U, N676U and N1240U, found at http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=235&modelid=6625

Canon says it doesn't support Vista 64 bit version. I couldn't get the scanner to work and kept getting the TWAIN error also, despite uninstalling / reinstalling the driver. Finally, decided to disconnect my 3rd party 16 foot USB cable and use the original cable. I swear, it WORKED! I can't explain why, but it did. Perhaps there is increased resistance, hence reduced power going to the scanner by using longer/different USB cable? Anyhow, it worked...go figure. If you have the 64 bit version of Vista, I guess it won't work(?).
