This is the Garmin Lock (anti-theft feature) security feature. Going back to the security location will unlock the unit but in order to reset the pin code, the original pin code must be input. To unlock the unit, it must be sent back to Garmin.
If you have a Garmin Lock on your nuvi, zumo or StreetPilot c500 series and you have forgotten your 4 digit PIN number you can unlock the device by returning to your Security Location. The Security Location is the location that you set when you first enabled the Garmin Lock on your device. Returning to the Security Location will unlock your device.
If you have forgotten your PIN and Security Location please contact Product Support for assistance. Please note we will require a copy of the receipt and there will be a charge to unlock the device as this issue is not covered by the warranty.
You would have to go with-in 50 meters of the Security Location you set up your unit....that could be your home or office.... you had to call Garmin to Register the unit, when you did it set that location as a security spot.
Once there it will automatically unlock for you, dont forget to enter new pin number before you leave that area.... if you dont know where it was at, you must send the unit back to Garmin with proper receipts.
FYI
Dont set your security location as your home, thiefs will know and change it so they could now have a working gps
I had for 2 years a nuvi 255w and its as working real good. Until one day i tried to open it up and it ask me a code pin. Witch i dont have. Ive been the only one owner on that GPS and never put any pin code on it and now just like that it want one... Grrrr that **** me off i cant use it anymore i dont have any acess anywhere exept that pin code of 4 number,. Is this possibility of update? I dont know I am the only one in that situation?
Unfortunately, even if you perform master reset on Garmin GPS unit, it does not reset Garmin Lock security feature, which password-protect most Garmin electronic devices to deter theft. If you forget the PIN or password unlock code to unlock the Garmin unit, the best solution is to bring it to Garmin to get unlocked. “Secure Location” does not unlock a locked Garmin unit either as it’s only a temporary fix as when it’s turn on outside the security location, the device is locked again."
So unfortunately, there is only one option: You have to send your nüvi into the Garmin, who can unlock it. Remember original receipt.

The only way to unlock a PIN locked Garmin is to enter the correct PIN number or take the unit to the location at which the PIN was set. Your only other option is to return the unit to Garmin.
I have de solution: *pick a torx 3 tool *release de equipment *put on 22 awg copper cable in the main chip on upper right pin and touch softly the + pole of a 3V batery. tested in a garmin nuvi 780
