There are a few possible reasons why your Simplicity American Quilter SA2400LX is only stitching straight:
Stitch length setting: Check that the stitch length setting is not set to zero or a very small number. If it is, the machine will only sew straight stitches.
Stitch selector mechanism: It's possible that there is a problem with the stitch selector mechanism that is preventing it from engaging properly. You may need to take it to a repair technician to have this checked and fixed.
Tension setting: Make sure that the tension setting is correct for the type of stitch you are trying to sew. If the tension is too high, it can cause the machine to only sew straight stitches.
Timing: The timing of the machine may be off, which can cause the machine to not properly engage the stitch selector mechanism. This is a more complicated issue and may require professional repair.
If you are comfortable with sewing machine repairs and want to try to fix it yourself, start with checking the stitch length and tension settings. If those are not the issue, it may be best to take it to a repair technician for further diagnosis and repair.
Your AE 68 will have three dials across the front, from L-R, stitch selector, stitch width and stitch length. To sew any stitch with a sidewise needle movement, you will need to turn the stitch selector to that stitch on the selector, then turn the stitch width to between 3 and 4 and the stitch length to a similar setting, adjusting to get the stitch formation you need. To sew with the discs, set all the dials to zero, then insert a cam into the Elnagraph on top of the machine. Then turn the selector to the disc icon, and the stitch length around to the "S" and stitch width to 4.
Don't use reverse if using the elnagraph stitches.
Make & Model??? Sounds like the stitch selector mechanism is stuck. If it's a mechanical machine, you can try oiling the mechanics of the stitch selector with Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil and then heat with hand-held hair dryer.
You are stuck in buttonhole. The selector knob does not spin round and around. It is moved from Stitch 1 to stitch 14 and back. Try selecting buttonhole and then running the knob in the other direction to straight stitch. If that does not work, (1) drop the lever that senses the button hole attachment, (2) sew a few stitches backward, (3) push the button hole lever rearward, once, hard, (4) rotate the stitch selector to straight stitch.
Needs a service, the selector will be seized inside and will need to be lubricated and hope it comes good...if left too long, may never restore funtiion
I bought a Janome 627 from a second hand shop in Melbourne, Australia. The pattern selector on that machine was stuck - you could select the right-most stitches but it would not move to the stitches to the left of the button holes. I opened the machine and lubricated the stitch selector plate, and lubricated the other the nylon gears, with Triflow clear synthetic grease. I also gently raised the arm connected to the selector plate to the left a little with my finger to help ease it across as I turned the selector button towards the stiches on the left. I could see how the arm needed to raise a little to click into each stitch so I gently helped it do the raise movement. After a few uses the stitch selector would move through all stitches on its own and weeks later it still does.

I opened the machine and lubricated the stitch selector plate, and other the nylon gears, with Triflow clear synthetic grease. These plates/gears are white. I also gently raised the metal arm connected to the selector plate to the left a little with my finger to help ease it across as I turned the selector button towards the stiches on the left. I could see how the arm needed to raise a little to click into each stitch so I gently helped it do the raise movement. It is clear which arm, as it was the one moving as I changed between the stitches that were able to be selected. After a few uses the stitch selector would move through all stitches on its own and weeks later it still does.
There are two types of discs - single and double.
For the thinner single discs do as follows:
1.Turn stitch width knob to "0"
2. Turn stitch length knob to "0"
3. Insert the single disc
4. Turn the top selector to "A"
5. Make sure the needle selector is in the centered position.
6. You may now choose any stitch length or width you wish. I usually try "3" for the width and 1/2 for the length to start.
For the thicker double discs do as follows:
1.Turn stitch width knob to "0"
2. Turn stitch length knob to "0"
3. Insert the double disc
4. Turn the top selector to "A"
5. Make sure the needle selector is in the centered position.
6. You may now choose any stitch width.
7. The stitch length must be put on "A" - this is the difference between the single and double discs! I hope this helps!
