Hi, I have a Samsung LN40A550 LCD TV which I have had for just over a year. ... I was watching TV yesterday and all of a sudden the picture went all. ... started makinga very high pitched buzzing sound with no picuture coming on. We did have a bunch of green vertical lines, but now just a black screen.

First thing to look at is the color wheel this model uses--usually it will make a high pitched fan like sound but can make a grinding sound also.

If it slows down from the 12,000 or so RPM speed it will cause color issues.

It seems color wheel problem in your tv that gets problem after some time and you hear high pitch noise along with picture flicker.
Color wheel need to be replaced to solve this issue. Required color wheel is available with PartStore.com (click to view image of part and price info) and it is job of qualified tv repairman because light engine will take apart for that.

This tv have a colors wheel,it dead.Make loud motor noises,high pitch squiling noises,have pictures flashes black&white with the pictures.All these are the causes of the colors wheel.The colors wheel is dying and dead is spinning off of it motor axis.The colors wheel,must be replaced.Hire a tv Tech. to do the job.Because it not easy to replaced the colors wheel,u must take out alots of machanical parts even can come to the colors wheel to replaced the colors wheel it self.

Hi,It sounds like a problem with the color wheel or DMD board. The color wheel is a rotating disc that has a gamma of colors it spins at high rpms.The light of the lamp goes through it to create the colors on your tv.When it starts to go bad you will hear ,humming,buzzing,high pitch noises ,you might also experiment color distortion ,black and white picture. This is how the DMD works: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dlp1.htm Basically the light of the lamp goes through a tunnel that carries a color wheel(rotating disc with a gamma of colors that creates the colors on your tv)then the light of the lamp goes through the DMD board which is a chip composed of around 2 million pixels that creates the images and colors.When it starts to fail it will create black bars,pixelation,color distortion or white dots on screens. The color wheel is bad. Mine did the same thing, eventually the wheel shattered, pieces of glass everywhere and picture was black and white
