that guide shows how to change the cartridges and no you dont have to wait untill they have run out to change the cartridges

Are the black & colour same type (T700/T800)?. Some epson will not recognize chip if both chip not same type.

Epson sx105 Refuses to recognise a replacement black ink. Suspect that might be because not used for 4 months
You MAY need to purge the black ink channel in the printer. Use the cleaner supplied in refill kits and a squeeze bulb to get the channel flowing. Some times the printing head has to be removed to clean it if really bad.
