How can I get the printer to take from tray 2 as the default.  It is going to tray 1 even if there is no paper in it.   I have read the manual, and nothing I have tried has worked.  Please help.  Thank you.

Go to the paper menu set tray 1, Letter size and "any" for paper type.

Set tray 2 Letter and paper type "Plain"

If you print a test page does it pick up from tray 2?

Try putting tray 1 to "any" for size and the rest as stated before.

    Print out a menu page.

It should be set like this:

    copies=1

    paper size=letter

    override A4/lttr=yes

    MANUAL FEED=OFF

My printer had the same problem as well, but it was the paper on tray two which was making the problem. After I "neatly" replaced the paper back on feed tray #2, it worked!!!!

Cheers

My HP 4100N printer often automatically selects to print from tray 1 (the manual feed), when I want to print from tray 2 (the automatic feed). How do I set the default tray?

HP Laser Jet 4100 HP Not pulling paper from Tray 2
Action: The 4100 will look at tray 1 first then tray 2 If tray 1 is empty it will pull from tray 2 if the papersize matches the job otherwise back to tray 1 and ask for the paper. Your machine likely thinks the paper in tray 2 is not the size you want. For instance you have LETTER in tray2 But the machine thinks it is legal. The LJ 4100 detects the paper size in tray 2 automatically. If you print a configuration page: MENU them INFORMATION then ITEM then CONFIGURATION PAGE then SELECT. The page will print and show what size paper the machine thinks is in Tray 2 if it says LEGAL and you have LETTER you need to Check The Paper Backstop in TRAY 2. The back stop sets the length of the paper if it is not at Letter (8 1/2 x 11) the machine will not detect LETTER. Even if it just a little bit off or between positions.
If it is set at LETTER then you may have bad switches in the machine that are operated by the tray. Or the arms on the tray that operate the switches are not moving properly. You will find the arms on the rt, side of the tray and feel them change position when you move the backstop.

HP Laser Jet 4700n-Light printing on right side of paper. Removed all cartridges and toner, cleaned and recalibrated after start up. Still light printing on right side. Any suggestions??

Is the light printing the same for black and white vs color? Light printing on a side is not uncommon for these printers. It is usually caused by the laser optics getting dirty. But this usually shows up more in one color than the other. Such as something printed in yellow is fine while red is faded on one side. If the light on the right side printing is the same on all colors including black then I would suspect something with your transfer unit.
If you do notice that it us just on black or another color then it is definately time to get the laser optics cleaned.

HP Color laser jet 4700n 49.3048 service error

The problem is usually caused by printing a PDF file with fonts/page size/ page formating errors which will cause the printer to display the 49.3048 error. The only way to use the printer is to POR or recycle the power and delete the print job from the server or spooling device and cancel it on the printer before the offending command is issued to the printer again. You can try updating the firmware to the latest version 46.140.5 from the HP website. MIke L.

Cant figure out how to open Tray 1 to clear paper jam

Leave Tray1 closed. Remove tray 2. Push down on green arrows visible after removing Tray 2. You should see the jammed paper on the plastic tray which becomes accessible after pushing down on the green arrows.

Have you would try a different paper cassette.
Usually that clunking noise is associated with gears not mashing.
Is the lifter lifting the platform or not?
There might be something above the paper tray, maybe even the paper input assembly preventing the paper platform from reaching the top.
Check these and let me know what happens.
