Gas dryer starts and drys fine, but after it warms up there is a loud clunking grinding banging noise that will come and go. The grinding noise will stay pretty constant, the banging hits once in a while, like a metal object on a piece of clothes would. At times it almost sounds like it is backfiring. This happens even if the dryer is empty.
It sound like there is change or hard object in the inner dryer tumbler fins Not sure what model or make the dryer is need more info please.Maytag inglis??????
Sorry trying to help to many you need a rear drum rollor for your dryer. You need to remove the 2 screws at the bottom of your dryer front panel then the front removes. After that remove 4 screws 2at the left 2 at the right .After that you can reach trew the rear to take belt off but remember how it came off.after that you will need clip plyers to remove clip on rollor shaft. It would be wise to replace as the problem will accur again good luck:)

Hi Thanks for the reply.
Sorry I thought the model info I entered would follow my post...
Its a maytag model LDG9334AAE Gas Dryer
I really doubt it is change, it's much louder than that, more like if you were drying jeans with a big heavy belt buckle. Sometimes it's more like an intermittent popping. ...and the grinding noise. I'm wondering if a bearing is going out?? Can I lube anything back there?
Thanks
Another thing I just noticed, HEAT makes it worse. I turned off the gas petcock and let it run, and the noise all but disappeared. I turned the gas back on and within a couple of minutes the noise is back. The clunking is not really so loud, but it is fast. almost sounds like someone playing some bongo drums. about 4 beats per second...
Thanks so much for helping.
It does sound like a bearing however, I found that when the dryer is running, and I block the exhaust vent with my hand, the noise stops! Let go, the noise returns.
I had the same problem and decided to take it apart and see what was going on. I found that the blower wheel was broken. Makes a racket , also the air wasnt circulating properly causeing loads to take longer. Its an easy fix and I found the part for $28 with shipping. When I inspected the blower wheel I noticed the center was broken and the wheel wobbled. Sounded like we were drying a brick in there!
