not sure what model tv you have but there should be a menu on the tv. seach thru it and select the zoom option if not. shut and unplug the tv for 20 minutes that will reset it back to factory settings for you let me know if this helps!
The reason you can't find a vertical width control is there isn't one..all that is done through the main board and the tcon board in the TV...you may have one of those boards bad...there really isn't a way to troubleshoot this without some quite fancy test gear. You could try updating the firmware and do a hard reset on the TV for starters, wondering if its in the zoom mode.
It sounds like you accidentally enabled a zoom feature or something similar.
Most remote controls should have a clearly labeled "zoom" button or a "picture size" option. If not, go into your TV's menu and look for something zoom related.
If this doesn't work, just go ahead and toy around in your TV's menu. I strongly suggest writing down the default settings so you can go back to them if you screw something up.
I had the same problem when I bought my TV. Looking at your remote try pushing the left arrow button. The left and right arrows work the zoom feature. It also sets the picture format. Try it and post your results.
