An external drive has two major components -- the disk-drive and the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if that interface hardware is the problem (and if the disk-drive by itself is 'readable').

Hello John,

The Store 'n' Go PinStripe USB Drive from Verbatim has a push and pull sliding feature which protects the USB connection when it is not in use without the need for a separate cap which is easily lost.

Usb devise not recognised

You probably damaged the drive from sudden disconnection of the signal line. I would suggest trying it on one other computer before considering it trashed.

USB External hard drive 160 GB not recognized by desktop Windows XP OS

Very possible your problem is that this drive is not externally powered and your desktop does not put out enough power to drive it.  I'm guessing your desktop is older.  Especially if your desktop is USB 1.0 this problem would occur.  Your best bet in this case is to either mount a newer USB expansion card into your desktop, or get another externally powered harddrive and transfer data over to it from this one with your laptop.

USB port problems

Try going into the BIOS and see if the USB Ports are enabled. I don't know what type of system you have. When you turn on the pc it will prompt 'F1 to enter setup' or it might be F10. Do you have a USB mouse or keyboard? Try those in different ports.
