My GE 5.8 cordless phone is in do not disturb mode . how can i get it back to normal

Question is kind of Vague, so I'm assuming you are trying to turn off the Do Not Disturb (DND).
In the standby mode, press the do not disturb button on the base. The DND indicator will light and DO NOT DISTURB shows in handset display. To cancel, press the do not disturb button again.

Sounds like you might want to remove the battery for a day to erase the memory and change the phone settings back to the factory settings.
Open up the back cover of the handset, remove the rechargeable battery and leave it disconnected for a full day. Do the same thing for the base unit, they sometimes have a 9volt battery in the base unit.
Hopefully after the phone if reset to factory settings the ringer will work again.
NOTE. you will lose all your speed dials and other custom programming when you do this procedure.

The Very Last paragraph states the following...

Do Not Disturb (DND)
DND allows you to mute the ringer on all handsets.

It doesn't list a Do No Disturb function... Is it possible that you have the ringer volume turned off?

I just removed the batteries from both phones and it reset itself.

There is a button on the base (NOT the phone). You need to press it once again to turn "Do not disturb" off.

There is a button on the main base that says " Do not disturb" my 4 year old son must have pushed it. It was an easy solution.

For GE 6.0: There is a button on the base lower right corner  (NOT the phone), you need to press it once again to turn off Do Not Disturb

For GE 5.8 GHz: 1. Pick up the phone handset and dial *98.

If understand you right then there is button on the base that says, “do not disturb”
Just press that button on the base and that should fix it. You may have already
