I had a diagnostic test failure a week ago-I want to say short pass test..something like that..but had no problems since (made a restore point to be safe, and have a repair disk). Then tonight I turn it on and I get the HP intro screen with the 4 entry options, and instead of windows booting the screen just went and stayed black. Front PC lights were blue on top, solid yellow on bottom while the screen was black. Powered down, unplugged power for a bit, rebooted, and did startup repair, and restore, which got it working. Any thoughts?

I solved this on a Dell GX280 by removing the CPU and then reseating it in the socket. Also cleaned cpu and heatsink and applied new thermal compound.

boot system into safe mode. locate the icon for my computer. right click and go to properties. locate the computer name tab and select it. find the radio button for "change" and click it. rename the computer to something considerably shorter then what you have. the system cannot boot and complete the logon process if the computer name is longer than 200 "bytes"

This is most likely the power inverter board in the monitor - this is common in many monitors. If it started taking longer and longer to display an image, and the power light is blinking on-and-off, that's the problem. You can confirm that it's the monitor and not your computer or the cable by plugging in another monitor if you have one to try.
If it's under warranty, send it back, if not, there are inverter boards for many common models of LCD monitors that are replaceable. The board can run anywhere from $50 on up. Depending on how old it is, you may find it better to just replace it with a gently used one from ebay.

You might want to try going into setup and setting your boot drive options to DVD drive as your 1st, HD as 2nd and Floppy as 3rd. Put your windows disk in the DVD before boot and run the program from DVD.
