You need a specialist or a dealer. Try the Jeep owners club website or forums to see if someone has had the same problem. If you need a new key and receiver, be sitting down when they tell you the price!!

bad lock, or its jammed some how,
the key has to work.
replace the lock. or get a lock smith to fix it.
Id pull the skins and check it very carefully , even remove it
and make sure its not damaged somehow, ice damaged, last winter.
and progressed to worse. most damage does that.
just to be sure, make sure its not in child safe mode.
did you read the operators guide, on that?

IT is probably refering to the fact that the immobiliser is not recognising you key. Check the key battery is ok The key damage will be a fault in the remote part of the key and not to physical damage that you can see.

i think the dealer has to reprogram this.

it is a common weith this jeeps. it is the BCM

electronic key on 2008 jeep cherokee says key damaged or key not programmed. car won't start. some things work but radio won't come on. etc..

This sounds like a bad chip in the key, try a spare key, if it starts with spare key then key is bad, if it doesnt start then you will need reprograming

the keys on the newer jeeps have computer chips in them. the chip may have been damaged try your spare key if that solves the issue becarfule with that spare key cause replacment keys are very spendy

if the key has been dropped or kept near a high magnetic item (a tv screen)it will go out,use the spare until you can get all keys reprogrammed together
